Peace While WaitingPsalm 112:7

The Bag Under the Folding Chair

This message is for the ten minutes in a green room before you have to walk out and be steady in front of a room full of people, with your phone face down in the bag under the chair and results due any hour, after two days of rehearsing both endings in your head

There is a clock on the wall of the green room and it is the only thing in here that is honest about the time.

Ten minutes. The room has a couch that three different churches have owned, a mirror with one bulb out, a bowl of fruit nobody has ever eaten from, and a folding chair by the door with her bag under it. Somebody has put a bottle of water on the arm of the couch and written her name on it in marker, which is a kindness, and she has not opened it.

Her phone is in the bag, face down, on silent, zipped in. That was deliberate and she did it in the parking lot. If it rings while she is out there she cannot answer it, and if she sees that it rang she will not be able to do anything else, so it goes in the bag and the bag goes under the chair, and the arrangement is as close to peace as she has managed all week.

The results are due any hour now. Not any day. Any hour.

And here is what she has actually been doing for the last two days, in the car, in the shower, at four in the morning: she has been in that phone call already. Dozens of times. She has heard the good version and felt her knees go, and she has heard the bad version and watched herself tell her family in the kitchen, and she has planned what she would say, and how she would hold her face, and which people she would call first. She has lived through both endings so many times that she is tired in the way a person is tired after something that has not happened.

Somebody puts their head around the door and says five minutes, and smiles, and goes.

Five minutes. And it is not the walking out that is heavy. She can walk out. She has walked out with worse than this in the bag. It is that she has spent two days paying for a phone call twice, once now and once when it comes, and nobody told her that was the arrangement she had agreed to.

That is you, perhaps, with your own bag and your own clock. You are not in the news yet. You are in the room before the news, and you have already been in the other room forty times, and every one of those visits cost you something real.

Both endings, forty times

First, plainly, because it should not be a footnote. The people running that test are doing a real and good thing and nothing on this page competes with them. Keep the appointment. Answer the phone when it comes. Nothing here sets prayer against care, and anybody who does that is handling something that is not theirs to handle.

Now the rehearsal.

Rehearsing is not the same as preparing, and the reason it feels like preparing is that it uses all the same muscles. Preparation puts a thing in place. Rehearsal just runs the scene, and the scene runs you, and at the end of it nothing has been prepared and something has been spent.

The cruelty in it is the arithmetic. If the news is good, you paid for the bad version anyway. If the news is hard, you will pay for it then, in full, with the strength you have already used up. Either way the rehearsal takes its fee, and it takes it in the middle of the night from a person who has no more to give.

That is not a fault in you. Let me be exact about that, because this is the site where a sentence like that gets twisted. A mind that rehearses is a mind trying to protect you by getting there first. It is doing its best. It is simply not able to do what it thinks it is doing.

So I want to put a psalm beside it, and I want you to notice what the psalm does not say:

He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.Psalm 112:7

Read it twice. It does not say the tidings are good. It does not say there will be no bad news, and it does not promise the phone call. It says the heart is fixed. You were held in the days between long before the test was ordered, and the holding did not begin with it. That is not my sentiment about you. Psalm 112:7 puts a fixed heart underneath a person who may still hear evil tidings, and it is the Holy Spirit who fastens a heart there rather than a person's own nerve.

Fixed is not the same as informed

We usually want steadiness the cheap way. We want to be steady because we already know how it ends. That is not steadiness, that is relief, and it can only be issued after the fact.

The psalm is describing something else entirely. A heart that is fixed is fastened to something outside the news, so that the news, whatever it turns out to be, arrives at a person who is already anchored rather than at a person who is trying to find something to hold on the way down.

And that is the reason I can write this to you without knowing your result, and it is why this page reads exactly the same whether your call is the one you hoped for or the one you did not. If the whole of your peace depended on the answer, I could not honestly say a word to you until it came.

You have a heart that was fixed by somebody other than the news, and Psalm 112:7 is where that is written, and it is His Spirit who does the fastening while you are standing in a room with a bowl of fruit in it.

Now, both halves of what this site says, in one breath, because either half alone becomes a lie.

God heals. He heals bodies. That is His character, it is written, and this domain exists to say it out loud rather than to hint at it.

And I do not promise you the result. Not the timing, not the wording, not what that call says when it comes. I cannot and I will not, and no honest voice can. We say what He has said and we leave the current to Him. Both of those are true at once and I am holding both in front of you, because handing you only the first one would feel wonderful today and would be a cruelty by Thursday.

One more thing, and I would rather say it and not need it. If these two days have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking it would be simpler for everyone if you were not here to get the call, tell one living human being today rather than tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot sit with you. You deserve somebody who can.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true with five minutes left, with the bag under the chair and the clock being honest on the wall.

You have not been left to hold your own heart steady, and you were never the one fastening it. It is written in Psalm 112:7 that the heart is fixed, and the sentence is about the fastening rather than about the person's grip, and it is His Spirit who carries that into a room ten minutes before a door.

I am not going to predict your news, in either direction. I am saying that here, at the hottest part of this page, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and where it would do the most harm. He heals, and the result is His, and both of those stay standing whether your call is the good one or the hard one.

This is yours: the next ten minutes, lived in the room you are actually in, with a heart that was anchored before the phone was ever put in the bag. It is written, the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line hold weight in a real room, and it does not require you to know the ending first.

Declare this over yourself

Now say these out loud, in the green room, with your hand still on the phone. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His and not yours by nature, given to you in Him and never earned by staying calm. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit carries the words, not the steadiness of your voice. What God does with this body is His to decide, and I say all three of these under that, and nothing on this page promises you a result or predicts your news in either direction. What is settled is that your heart was fixed before the tidings, whatever the tidings turn out to be.

  1. Phone in the bag under my chair, you are carrying news and you are not carrying my heart. Psalm 112:7 says a heart that is fixed is not afraid of evil tidings, and mine was fixed somewhere you cannot reach.
  2. Rehearsal I run at four in the morning, stop in the name of Jesus. You have been charging me twice for one phone call, once now and once again when it comes. It is written that the heart fixed on the Lord is not afraid of the news, and His Spirit is the one holding that heart steady, not my nerve.
  3. Lord, You already know what that call says and You are not waiting to find out with me. Your Spirit holds Your word from Psalm 112 over me while I walk out that door, and the result is Yours and is not mine to promise anybody. I am putting the phone face down and doing the next ten minutes with You in the room I am actually in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
