Daily CarriedMatthew 6:11

The Alarm Nobody Else Sets

This message is for the alarm you set for a strange early number that nobody else in your street has ever had to set, because the morning that takes everyone else eight minutes takes you forty, and not one of those forty minutes will ever be a story anybody tells

Five fifty two.

Not six. Not five forty five. Five fifty two, because eight years of doing this have sanded the number down to exactly what it needs to be, and one minute either side of it makes the whole morning wrong.

The house is dark. The heating has not come on. She puts the kettle on because the kettle is the first domino, and while it goes she stands in the kitchen in the dark with one hand on the counter, in the four minutes that are hers, and this is the only part of the day that no one has designed.

Then it starts.

There is an order to it and the order is not optional. Everything that has to happen before anything else can happen. The bag packed last night by the door, checked again anyway. The chair that folds, in the trunk since Sunday. Two coats on the same hook because that is faster. The thing that has to be done first and done properly and done without hurrying, no matter how late it is getting, because hurrying it costs more time than it saves and she learned that the hard way in year one.

Six thirty two. Out the door.

And on the way down the driveway she watches the house opposite, where the front door opens at seven twenty and a boy comes out of it at a run with his backpack half open and one arm in a sleeve, and his mother waves from the doorway in a robe with a coffee, and they are gone in eight minutes flat. Eight minutes. She has counted, more than once, which she is not proud of.

Nobody will ever hear about the forty minutes. There is no version of this that becomes an anecdote. It will not be in a talk, it will not be in anyone's testimony, and it will not be in the Christmas letter, because there is nothing in it that resolves. It just happens again tomorrow at five fifty two.

That is you, perhaps, in your own dark kitchen with your own kettle and your own order of operations. Not in a crisis. Not in a story. Just in the fortieth minute of a morning that takes everyone else eight, on a day that will look precisely like yesterday.

What Jesus put in the middle of the prayer

When the disciples asked to be taught to pray, they got something startlingly small in the middle of it.

Give us this day our daily bread.Matthew 6:11

Not this year. Not this season. Not our lifelong provision, our five year plan, our resolution. This day. Daily. The unit Jesus chose to teach people to pray in is one single day, the one they were standing in, and He taught it to people whose circumstances were not about to change quickly and He knew that when He taught it.

Which means the prayer He gave was built for a life like yours, not for a life that turns around next week.

And notice what is being asked for. Bread. Not deliverance from the kitchen. Not a shorter morning. Bread, the plain thing, for the plain day, handed over. He does not treat that as a small prayer or a beginner's prayer. He puts it at the center of the one prayer He taught.

You are inside the day that prayer was written for, and the bread it asks for is for these hours and not some better set of hours later. Matthew 6:11 is where that stands written, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line taught on a hillside and makes it true at a counter in the dark at five fifty two, which is why the forty minutes are not the waiting room for your real life.

The two lies about a morning like this

There are exactly two things people will do with your forty minutes, and both of them are wrong, and both have probably landed on you this year.

The first is to treat it as an emergency that has gone on a long time. A siren left running. Something that ought to be being fixed and is embarrassing everyone by not being fixed. That framing exhausts people, and then they stop coming, and then somebody tells you that you withdrew.

The second is worse. It is the suggestion that a morning this long means something has gone wrong in you spiritually. That eight years is evidence. That there is a key, a phrase, a level, a thing left unsurrendered. Let me say this as plainly as I know how: nobody here lacked enough faith. That sentence is not in the book, it has never been in the book, and it is not true. Eight years of getting up at five fifty two is not a faith problem. It is closer to the definition of faithfulness than most things I could name.

And I am not going to swing to the other side and tell you that the goal is to accept it. Acceptance is not the finish line here and refusing to accept it is not a failure either. You are allowed to want this to be different. You are allowed to have wanted it to be different for eight years and to still want it at five fifty two tomorrow. Wanting is not unbelief, and I will not let anyone tell you it is.

You were never disqualified by the length of this, and there is no scoreboard anywhere with your name on it. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning and does not attach a condition to the morning, and it is His Spirit who brings that fresh into a dark kitchen on the eight hundredth repetition of the same day.

And one more thing, said straight, because I would rather say it and not need to. If the sameness of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have found yourself thinking the mornings would be simpler for everyone without you in them, say that out loud to a human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can be in the room with you tonight. This page cannot sit with you. A person can, and you deserve one.

Who is in the room for the forty minutes

Here is the thing I most want you to have.

The reason nobody tells the story of your morning is that stories need a turn, and the forty minutes do not turn. They just are. But God is not a storyteller looking for material. He is a Father in a kitchen, and He was not waiting outside the door for the interesting part.

Scripture gives us a God who counts things nobody else counts. Hairs. Sparrows. A cup of cold water handed to somebody. Two small coins put in a box by a widow that nobody in the building noticed except the one person whose opinion turned out to matter. Every one of those is a thing too small to be a story, and He is on record noticing it.

You have a witness to the forty minutes, and He has been present for every one of the eight years. Psalm 139:3 says He is acquainted with all your ways, which includes the boring ones, and it is His Spirit who makes that presence a fact about this morning and not a poster in a hallway.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a turn in the morning. The morning is the same tomorrow. It is a turn in who is in it with you.

Right now, as you read this, God is inside the forty minutes and not waiting at the end of them. Matthew 6:11 puts the bread in this day, and it is His Spirit who makes a dark kitchen at five fifty two a place where God is actually standing, which is not poetry and I do not mean it as poetry.

And now the honest thing, both halves in one breath, here where the heat is highest, because this is exactly the place where a promise would be easiest and most dishonest.

God heals. He heals bodies, Scripture says so without flinching, and this whole site was built because it is true. And I do not promise you the result. Not a shorter morning, not a different eight years, not a timing, not a shape. I do not know and no honest voice does. We say what He said and the current is His to send. And if the morning is the same for another eight years, that is not a verdict on you, not on your faith, not on the way you have prayed, and anybody who tells you otherwise has stopped speaking for God.

You have dignity in these hours that does not depend on them changing. It is written in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and He does not vacate the building at five fifty two and come back when things get interesting.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud tomorrow, in the kitchen, while the kettle goes. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His and was handed over in Him, and eight years has not worn a single letter off it. Scripture is the ground under every line and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them, not the volume, which at five fifty two will be low. What God does with this body and these mornings is His to decide, and I speak all three of these underneath that. Nothing here promises a result or puts a date on one. What is settled is that bread is given for this day, and that this day includes the forty minutes.

  1. Alarm set for five fifty two, you are the honest start of a real morning and you are not a punishment. Matthew 6:11 puts bread inside this day, and this day includes every one of those forty minutes.
  2. Idea that my life is only admin now, you came in around year three and you have no right to stay. Get out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God is acquainted with all my ways, and His Spirit is in the kitchen at five fifty two, so nothing here is filler.
  3. Lord, You are in the forty minutes, and I am not asking You to make them into a story. I am asking for today's bread, in Your own words, and Your Spirit is the one carrying this while my hands are full, and what You do with this body is Yours and not mine to promise. I am filling the kettle now, with You standing here.
