The last thing he does every night is hang up the tools, and the last tool is always the small adjustable wrench, because it lives on the hook nearest the door and it is the one he reaches for first in the morning.
Six forty on a Thursday, and the shop is his again. Bicycles up on the racks, two lawn mowers waiting on parts, the smell of chain oil and cut rubber and the coffee he made at two and never finished. Out front the street has gone gold at the ends of things, the way it does in the last half hour, and the light comes in low across the bench and lies down flat on the steel.
He wipes each tool with the blue rag before it goes up. The pegboard has outlines painted around every hook, black marker on white board, so a gap shows from across the room. Nothing sits on his bench overnight. That has been true for nineteen years, through two moves and one flood and the winter the heater died. A man who fixes things all day needs one surface in the world that is finished.
Then he opens the parts cabinet to put a spare pin away, and there, taped inside the door at eye level where he put it himself, is a white index card with a date written on it in pencil.
He looks at it. He looks at it every time that cabinet opens, which is maybe forty times a day. He has not moved it and he is not going to. The date is three weeks out. It belongs to something happening inside his own body that nobody in this shop knows about, and I am not going to tell you what it is, because it is his and it is not the point of this page.
Here is the point. Everything in this room has had the right thing said over it. He told a fourteen year old exactly what her brake cable needed and why. He told a man on the phone, kindly, that the mower was not worth the part. He has stood over a bent rim and said out loud, "you are fine, you are just out of true," and then made it true with his hands. His whole trade is speaking accurately over things that cannot speak for themselves.
And in three weeks of opening that cabinet door he has not once said out loud, over his own body, a single thing God says about it. Not once. He could tell you the date to the day. He could not give you one sentence God has spoken over the part of him the date is about.
That is you, perhaps, at your own bench, at the end of your own Thursday. There is a date. You could recite it in your sleep. And the room where you spend your life has heard your voice speak accurately over everything in it except the one thing you actually need a word over.
Speak to the bones
There is a moment in the prophets that has undone me since the first time I sat with it, because of how ordinary the instruction is and how impossible the audience.
A man is set down in a valley full of bones. Not fresh ones. Dry, the text says, and then very dry, which is the Bible's way of telling you that whatever window there might have been for this has closed and closed twice. And God does not tell him to grieve over them, or to draw a lesson from them, or to work out what they mean.
Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.Ezekiel 37:4
Say unto them. To the bones. Not about the bones, and not about the bones to somebody else in the room. They are addressed directly, in the second person, by a man standing in the dust with nothing in his hands, and the only thing he has to give them is a word that was never his to begin with.
Now notice what is not asked of the bones. They are not asked to believe anything. They are not asked to feel differently, to cooperate, to want it badly enough, or to have deserved it. They are asked to hear. The entire weight of that valley rests on the word being spoken and on the Spirit who comes into it a few verses later, and not one gram of it rests on the bones.
You are the one holding a word for the part of your body that cannot argue back, and it was put into your hands on purpose. Ezekiel 37:4 is the pattern and it has never been withdrawn, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the volume of a man's voice in an empty shop, who carries what is written into a body that has stopped expecting anything.
The one thing on the bench you did not put there
Now the honest part, and I want it said early rather than smuggled in at the end.
The date on that card is real. The people who wrote it trained for years to be able to write it, the care they are giving your body is a good gift, and nothing on this page asks you to move an appointment, stop anything, change anything, or set any of it against prayer. Keep the date. Go. The God who hears you is not in competition with the people looking after your body, and anybody who tells you He is has stopped speaking for Him.
But a date is not a word. A date is a position on a calendar. It tells you when something is going to be looked at, and it does not say one thing about who you are, and it never claimed to. The reason it has taken up so much room is not that it is loud. It is that it is the only thing being said in the shop.
Here is the pit, and I have watched steady people walk into it. When one sentence is repeated over a body forty times a day for three weeks, and another sentence is never once spoken over it, the first sentence begins to sound like the whole truth. That is not thin faith. That is what a room does. Say one thing in a room and nothing else, and the walls will hand that thing back to you all day long.
So we say the other thing out loud. God heals. I am not going to soften that, because Scripture does not soften it and this whole site was built to say it: He heals, He heals bodies, He has done it and He does it, and it is His nature and not a rumor. And in the same breath, because a page carrying a name like this one would be a liar if it dropped either half, I do not promise you the result. I cannot and I will not. I do not know what He is going to do with your body, and neither does anyone who tells you they do. We say what He has already said, and the current is His.
You have a word over this body that was spoken before the date was written, and it does not expire when the calendar turns. That is not my idea. Isaiah 55:11 says the word that goes out of His mouth does not return to Him void, and it is His Spirit who keeps it alive in a shop at closing time long after the man who said it has gone home.
And if it does not come the way you asked, hear this now rather than later: it is not because you failed to believe. Nobody here is short of enough faith. That sentence is not in the book, it is not true, and it has done more damage in quiet rooms than almost anything else people say to each other.
One more thing, because I mean it and I would rather say it too early than too late. If these three weeks have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the people around you would have an easier time of it without you, tell one living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit in the room with you tonight. A page cannot do that part. You deserve a person beside you, and there is no shame anywhere in this.
So. Here, at the bench, with the blue rag still in your hand.
The card stays where it is. Keep the date, keep the appointment, keep the people who are helping you. Nothing on the calendar changes tonight. What changes is that this room stops hearing only one sentence.
You have the other word, and it is not far off and it is not locked away, and it is already yours in Christ. It is written, and Hebrews 4:12 says the word of God is quick and powerful, which is not a compliment paid to a book but a description of something alive, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it live when a man says it out loud in his own shop with nobody there to hear him.
Let me say the second half again right here, at the hottest part of this, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and most dishonest. He heals. And I am not telling you what happens on that date. The result is His and it stays His, and nobody on this page is handing you a guarantee, and He is good whichever way the phone rings.
You were given the standing to speak over your own body on the day Christ came to live in you, and nobody can lift that off the hook. That is what is written over everyone who is in Him, and it is His Spirit, and not the strength of anybody's voice, who does the carrying.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing at whatever your bench is, with your hand where it was. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you and the authority is His, delegated, not manufactured tonight out of a good mood. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit is what carries the words into your body, not the force with which you say them. What God does with this body is His to decide, and I say all three lines under that. Nothing here promises you a result and nothing here dates one. What is settled is that He has spoken, and that His word does not come back empty.
- Card taped inside the cabinet door, you are a date and you are not a verdict over this body. Ezekiel 37:4 puts a word over things far drier than me, and it was spoken over this body long before your date was written in pencil.
- Suspicion that I am too small to be spoken over, get out in the name of Jesus. The thought that God addresses valleys and nations and not one ordinary body in a workshop did not come from Him. It is written that He spoke to the dry bones themselves, and His Spirit is the one who brought that word into this room, not the sound of me saying it.
- Lord, You speak over bodies, and You have spoken over mine, and I receive what You said tonight with my hand where it hurts. Your Spirit is the one who makes Your word live in me, and what You do with this body is Yours and never mine to promise. I am hanging up the last tool now, and Your word is the last thing said in this shop.
