What God SaysPsalm 33:9

The Third Carrel From the Window

This message is for the woman who carries her printouts to the third carrel in the public library because at home somebody would read her face, and who after ten weeks knows the letter's wording better than she knows one line God has said about her body, and needs to hear Him at the same volume she has been hearing the report

She rides two stops past her own, because the branch library on Ansell Street has carrels along the north wall and the third one from the window has a lamp that still works.

She carries a folder. Dark green, the kind with the elastic corner, gone soft at the fold from being opened and closed. Inside it are the printouts. The letter with the printed address at the top that she did not choose. The two pages she ran off on the library's own machine, because the printer at home is out of ink and she has not replaced the ink, and she knows exactly why she has not replaced the ink.

At home there is a kitchen and a person in it who loves her. That is the problem. At home somebody would look up from the sink and read her face in the half second before she got it arranged, and then the whole evening would have to be about her, and she would have to be the one handled gently, and she cannot do that on a Tuesday afternoon. So she comes here. Ten weeks now. The librarian with the pen through her bun has stopped asking whether she needs help finding anything.

She reads the same three paragraphs. She has them by heart and she reads them anyway, because reading them is a way of standing near them. She could tell you the exact line where the sentence turns. She could tell you which word they chose instead of a plainer one, and how long she sat with that choice the first afternoon. She knows the wording the way some people know a hymn.

And here is the sentence she has never said out loud, not even here, where nobody can see her face. She does not know one line God has said about her body with anything close to that clarity. Not one. She could not recite it. She could not find it on the page without looking. Ten weeks of the letter in high definition, and the other thing, if it has come through at all, has come through like a radio playing in somebody else's apartment.

The lamp buzzes a little. Out the window the light goes amber over the parking lot. She squares the printouts, taps them on the desk, slides them back into the folder, and she will be here again on Thursday.

That is you, perhaps, in a chair that is not yours, with a folder you know by touch. You did not come because you are morbid. You came because this is the only room where you are allowed to look at it straight. And nobody, in all these weeks, has sat down beside you and read you the other document at the same volume.

The letter was read to you. His word has not been.

Nothing about her is broken here, and I want that said before anything else. A letter arrives with an address and a date and somebody's signature on it, and it gets read the way official things are read: slowly, twice, alone. That is not morbidity. That is a grown woman doing the responsible thing with a piece of paper that concerns her.

But notice what nobody did. Nobody sat down opposite her, opened a book, and read the other document over her at the same volume, in the same room, with the same seriousness. She has one text in high definition and one in the far distance, and she came by that honestly. It is a difference of delivery, not a difference of devotion.

That gap is the exact place the psalm was written into. Not into an argument about whether God is able. Into the ordinary human problem of hearing one voice loudly and another faintly, and then mistaking the volume for the authority.

For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.Psalm 33:9

Read the tenses, because they are the whole matter. He spake. It was done. Not underway, not pending review, not scheduled. Done. And then a second verb for how it holds: it stood fast, which is what you say about something that does not move when weight is put on it.

You have a word standing over this body that was spoken before your letter was typed, and it has not been withdrawn since. That is not my sentence and I would not dare invent one. Psalm 33:9 is where it stands written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it off the page into the room you are sitting in, because ink does not do this. His Spirit does.

An idea has to be kept alive by whoever is holding it. A word that stood fast holds itself, and it was holding while she rode two stops past her house every Tuesday for ten weeks.

You are already carrying the louder of the two documents, and you have been carrying it the whole ten weeks. It was written long before the letter was drafted, the word says it stood fast rather than that it might, and the Holy Spirit does not need it to be new information to make it live in you. So the work in front of you is not manufacturing belief out of nothing. It is evening out the volume.

He spake, and it was done

Here is the pit, and I am going to name it plainly, because you have probably fallen into it once already this week. Somewhere between the third reading and the sixth, a person starts negotiating with the paper. If I understand it well enough. If I hold the wording exactly right. If I am the one who has thought about it most, then nothing gets to take me by surprise. Understanding turns into an insurance policy, and it does not pay out. Nobody was ever protected by knowing the worst sentence by heart.

And there is a meaner pit underneath that one. It says: if God had anything to say about me He would have said it by now, so the quiet is the answer. I want to stand square in front of that sentence and refuse it out loud. That sentence, the one that says you did not have enough faith and that is why the room went quiet, is not in the book and it is not true, and it does not get to sit in the same room as you while I am here.

You are standing on something that was settled out loud before you were born, and it holds your weight. Psalm 33:9 does not say He hopes, and it does not say He intends. It is written in the plainest past tense there is, and the Spirit who moved over those words when they were given is the same Spirit who is with you at that desk with the lamp that buzzes.

And one more thing, and I mean it, so I am saying it in the middle rather than tucking it at the end. If these ten weeks have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking that not being here would be a relief, tell one living human being today, not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit in the room with you tonight. A page cannot do that part. You deserve a person beside you, and asking for one is not a failure of anything.

The breakthrough

The turn is smaller than you are expecting, and it is not a technique. It is simply this: the two documents stop being one loud and one faint.

God heals. I believe that in the plain way and not the careful way. He does it, He is doing it, He is not embarrassed by being asked, and He is not in competition with the people looking after your body, so keep every appointment you have. And I am not able to tell you what He does with the part of your body the letter is about, and I will not stand here and pretend that I can. Anybody who hands you a guarantee has swapped a Father for a machine with a slot in it. We say out loud what He has already said. What He does with it stays His.

That is not a smaller thing than a guarantee. It is a truer one, and it is the only ground that holds when the news is not what you wanted.

You have His word over this body and you have His Spirit in the room, and neither of those is a maybe. Psalm 33:9 was spoken before this year and stood fast right through it, and the same Spirit who moved over those words is the one carrying them into you while you sit under a buzzing lamp with a green folder in front of you.

Declare this over yourself

You do not have to work up a voice for this. The standing is not yours by nature and it is not yours by effort: Christ is in you, the authority is His and not yours, and Scripture is the ground under every line below. The Holy Spirit carries these words, not the force of your delivery, so say them quietly if quiet is what you have today. And what God does with this body is His to decide. Nothing here dates a result and nothing here promises one. We say what He has already said, and we leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Green folder in the third carrel, you are three paragraphs and you are not the word over my body. Psalm 33:9 says He spake and it was done, and what He said about me stood fast long before you were printed. I am reading you in the light of a louder document.
  2. Quiet I mistook for a verdict, get out in the name of Jesus. God spoke about this body before anybody typed anything, and He has not taken one syllable of it back. I am standing in what He said, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it land.
  3. Lord, You spake and it was done, You commanded and it stood fast, and Psalm 33:9 is the floor I am standing on this afternoon. In Your name I am reading Your word out loud over this body in the third carrel, at full volume, and I am leaving the rest with You. Thank You for saying it before I knew to ask.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
