The dryer she always takes is the third one along, and while it turns she reads the report again, in her coat, on the plastic seat, and she does not need to unfold it to do it.
Saturday, the laundromat on the corner, because the machine at home gave up the same week everything else did. Warm in here, and loud in the way that lets a person be alone: six dryers going, the smell of hot cotton and somebody's fabric softener, a student in the corner with his headphones in and a basket of black t shirts, a young mother whose toddler is putting one sock at a time into an open drum and taking it out again. Nobody looks at anybody. That is why she comes.
The report is folded in three in the inside pocket of her coat and it has been there nine days. She has read it so many times that she can see the second paragraph with her eyes shut, the one with the long word in it and the phrase after the long word, and she is not going to tell you what it says and neither am I, because the word on her page is not the point of this. She could recite it. She does recite it, actually, without meaning to, at the sink, in the line for the bus, at three in the morning: the sentences run in her like the drum runs, round and round, and she has become fluent in a document she never wanted to learn.
Here is the thing she noticed this morning, on the plastic seat, and it is the reason for the whole of this page. In nine days she has read that report perhaps two hundred times. And she has a Bible in the bag at her feet, her mother's, soft at the corners, and she has not once, in nine days, opened it and read out loud over her own body what God has said about it. Not once. She could not tell you what He says. She could tell you the report to the comma.
That is you, perhaps, on your own plastic seat, with your own folded page. You have read what the report says. You could recite it. And you have not read what He says, not over yourself, not out loud, not with your hand where the trouble is, and some part of you has quietly concluded that the page in your pocket is the only word there is over this body.
Two documents
Let me say the honest thing about the report first, because I am not going to ask you to argue with it and I am not going to pretend it is not there.
The report is true. It was written by people who trained for years to write it, and the care they are giving you is a gift, and nothing on this page tells you to stop it, change it, or set it against prayer. This site does not do medicine and I would be a fool and a danger to pretend otherwise. The report is a true page and it stays true and it stays in your pocket.
But it is one document. And here is the pit, plainly: you have been living for nine days as though it were the only one. The report has been read over this body two hundred times, in your voice, at three in the morning, and the other document has been read over it never, and the Holy Spirit, who is the one who makes that document live, has not been given a hearing in the room. And a body that hears one word two hundred times and the other word not at all will start to believe that the first word is the last word, not because it is, but because it is the only one that has been spoken in the room.
There was a soldier once who understood documents better than anyone in the crowd. He came to Jesus about a servant who was suffering at home, and Jesus offered to come, and the man said no.
Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.Matthew 8:8
Only say the word. He was a man under authority, with men under him; he said go and they went. He knew what a word does when it comes from the one with the standing to say it. And Jesus, Scripture says, marveled at him. Not at a technique. At a man who understood that there is a word above the report, and that it does not need to be shouted, and that it belongs to Jesus and not to the person asking.
You are under a word that was spoken over your body before the report was typed, and it has standing here. I am not asserting that on my own; it is what is written about the soldier and his Lord, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a word Jesus said in Capernaum and lets it be heard in a laundromat.
He sent His word
Now the psalm, and I want you to hear it as a sentence about a document.
He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.Psalm 107:20
He sent out His word. That is the second document. It went out from His mouth, and Isaiah says the same of it: it does not return to Him empty, it accomplishes what He purposes. That is what a word from God is: not a wish, a sending. And it was sent long before your page was printed. God heals. I am going to say that plainly and I am not going to soften it, because Scripture does not soften it and this site was built to say it. He heals, and He heals bodies, and it is His character and His word and not a rumor.
And now the other half, in the same breath, and hear me hold both, because a site with this name would be a liar if it dropped either. I do not promise you the result. I cannot, and I will not, and no honest voice can. I do not know what He is going to do with your body, and neither does anyone who tells you they do. We declare His word and we leave the current to Him. That is not a hedge; it is the difference between a person under authority and a person pretending to hold it. The soldier said only say the word; he did not say I will make it happen. Neither will I. And if the result does not come, or does not come the way you asked, that is not a verdict on your faith or your words or anything you did or failed to do, and anyone who tells you it is has stopped speaking for God.
You are not carrying the outcome, and it was never handed to you. That is written into the shape of the whole story: the soldier carried the asking, and Jesus carried the word, and it is His Spirit who carries the word now, not the volume of your voice or the quality of your believing.
Which leaves the thing that is yours, and it is small, and it is the whole of what this page asks. Scripture records Jesus saying that faith the size of a mustard seed, spoken to a mountain, moves it, and I want you to weigh the seed against the report: it is smaller than the second paragraph. And it is spoken. Not felt, not achieved. The mountain in front of you is not the report; I told you already, the report stays in your pocket and stays true. The mountain is a sentence: the report is the only word over this body. Say something to that. You are in Christ, and He is the one who sent the word, so the standing to read His word over your own body was given to you in Him, and it is His Spirit who makes a woman's voice on a plastic seat carry a word she did not write.
One more thing before the picture, and I mean it plainly. If these nine days have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you find yourself not wanting to be here, say that to a human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who will sit with you tonight. A page is not enough for that, and you deserve a person beside you.
So here is what is true, on the plastic seat, with the dryer turning and the page in your pocket.
God has spoken over this body, and His word stands here, in this room, today. Psalm 107 says He sent it, and Isaiah says it does not come back empty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it into a laundromat without needing you to have read it two hundred times to catch up.
I am not going to promise you what the next report says. I said that already and I am saying it again here, at the receiving moment, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and most dishonest. He heals; the result is His. Both are true and I am holding both in front of you at once.
And you have the second document, and it is in the bag at your feet, and it has never been read over you in your own voice, and that is what changes now. It is written, and it is His Spirit who makes it live, and the reading takes less time than one turn of the dryer.
Declare this over yourself
Now say these, out loud, on the seat, with the hand where it was. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and He is the one with the authority the soldier recognized, and it was delegated to you in Him and not earned by nine days of reading. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit carries the words into your body, not the force with which you say them. The mountain here is the sentence that says the report is the only word, and Jesus said the mountain is spoken to, so speak to it and then to God. What He does with this body is His to decide, and I say every line under that, and nothing on this page promises a result or dates one. What is settled is that He sent His word, and it does not return empty, and it stands here.
- Report folded in three, you are a true page and you are not the only word over this body. Psalm 107 says He sent out His word and healed them, and His word was spoken over me before yours was typed.
- Fear that the last word has been read, you have been reading one page and calling it the whole file, and I set you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that His word does not return to Him empty, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into this room, not the sound of my voice.
- Lord, You heal, and You have spoken over this body, and I receive what You said, today, in this room, with my hand where it hurts. I thank You, because Your Spirit is the one who makes Your word live in me, and the result is Yours and not mine to promise, and I am not leaving this room until Your word has been read in it.
