She gets to the stop at six oh two for a bus that comes at six fifteen, and the thirteen minutes are not an accident.
It is dark still, or that blue that comes before light, and the shelter has one working panel and one that flickers. There is a man who is always there before her with a thermos and a paper. There is a girl with a backpack who sleeps standing up. Across the road a store owner is running water over the sidewalk with a hose, the same length of sidewalk, every morning, the way people do a thing that does not strictly need doing.
She stands where the door will open. She has this measured to about a foot and a half.
Because there is one seat on that bus. The one behind the driver, on the low platform, the one with the pole right there and the rail along the window. On the mornings she gets it, the whole day is a different day. She can put her bag down. She can hold the pole for the turn at the light. She arrives at work with something left in her.
On the mornings she does not get it, because a man with headphones dropped into it at six fourteen without ever knowing there was anything to know, she stands for twenty five minutes with her hand up on the strap and her bag on her shoulder, and by ten o'clock the day is already spent. Not dramatically. There is no scene. She just does the day at a deficit, and by two in the afternoon she has gone quiet, and somebody at work will decide she is in a mood.
Nobody knows about the thirteen minutes. Nobody knows about the seat. She has never once explained it, not because it is a secret, but because there is no natural moment in a working life to say: my morning has an arithmetic in it, and the arithmetic runs whether anybody sees it or not, and it will still be running next March.
That is you, perhaps, at your own six oh two. You have a version of the seat. You have the small daily calculation that decides what the afternoon costs, and it is not a crisis, and nothing about it is going anywhere, and there is no version of this that ever becomes a story anybody stands up and tells.
The arithmetic nobody sees
Let me start by telling you what I am not going to do, because I suspect it has been done to you.
I am not going to treat your carrying as a small emergency. An emergency has an end and yours does not, and a person handed emergency language for something ordinary and long is being asked to live in an alarm that never stops ringing. And I am not going to treat it as a faith problem that has gone on too long, as though the reason you are still doing the arithmetic in March is that somebody upstairs is waiting for you to say a better sentence. That is a lie, it does real harm, and it is not in the book.
Your carrying is not a lesser thing. It is just quiet, and quiet is not the same as small.
Here is what is written, from a man who was not having a good week either.
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22
Look hard at the middle word, because everything is in it. Sustain. Not remove, not cancel, not lift off you by Thursday. Sustain: to hold something up under the weight it is actually carrying, to keep supplying what it takes, to be underneath the thing that has to keep going. He does not say the burden evaporates at the bus stop. He says there is Someone underneath the person carrying it.
You have a carry that nobody is clapping for, and it is seen in full by the God whose written word says He sustains. That is not me being kind to you. Psalm 55:22 is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings what is written down into an actual Tuesday, which is where you live.
Cast is a verb you use every morning
Notice also that casting is not a ceremony. It is a throw. You do it, and then tomorrow comes and you do it again, and doing it again is not evidence that it failed the first time. That is simply what a daily thing is.
I have watched people carry a long thing and quietly decide that their spiritual life has become embarrassing, because they are asking about the same subject they were asking about last year, and everybody else seems to have moved on to new material. Hear me: repeating yourself before God is not a failure of faith. It is what a person does who actually has to live tomorrow as well as today.
You were not moved off your place this morning, not by the seat and not by the standing. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved is written down and it holds on the days you get the seat and on the days you do not, and His Spirit is the one keeping you standing in your own place, which is worth more than the seat was.
Now let me say the two true things together, because they belong in the same breath and neither is honest alone. God heals. He does it still, He has never withdrawn from human bodies, and what Scripture says about His kindness toward them is plain and I will not water it down. And I do not promise you an outcome, not tomorrow's and not next year's. I will not, because the moment I promise it, your body becomes the evidence for my sentence, and I have made a hostage out of the very thing I am trying to bless. What He does is His to decide, and He is good either way.
And one thing more, which I want to say carefully. Acceptance is not the goal here and it is not a failure either. If you have made peace with the arithmetic, that peace is not resignation and nobody gets to call it giving up. If you have not made peace with it, you are not behind. Both of those people are welcome on this page and neither one has to become the other before God will sit with them.
This is yours: a burden with somewhere to go, every morning, as often as you need to throw it there. It is written, so it is not a technique somebody sold you, and the Spirit carries it, so it does not depend on how well you throw.
And one more thing, because I mean it. If the long quiet of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have found yourself thinking that the people who love you would have a simpler time without you in it, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can come and sit with you tonight. A page cannot sit with you. You deserve somebody in the room, and asking for that is not weakness in any direction.
So here is the turn, and it is not a rescue from the arithmetic. It is a Person underneath it.
Nothing about your morning has to become a story for God to be in it. There is no stage version of your life that He is waiting for. The bus, the strap, the quiet at two in the afternoon, the calculation you run before your feet are on the floor: that is the actual place where He sustains, and He has been doing it in the standing as well as in the sitting.
It is already settled that the Lord sustains what is cast on Him. The word says so and it is not a mood or a slogan; His Spirit is the one who makes it more than a sentence on a morning when the seat is gone.
You are not being asked to be grateful for the weight. You are being handed somewhere to put it, today, and again tomorrow, and that is not a lesser gift than being rid of it.
Declare this over yourself
You have the standing to say these because Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by you. Every line here rests on Scripture, which is what makes it authority instead of hopefulness; the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, not the volume of your voice; and what God does with this body is His to decide, so nothing below promises you a result or a date.
- Six fifteen bus with one good seat on it, you are a real arithmetic and you are not the size of my life. Psalm 55:22 says the Lord sustains what is cast on Him, and His Spirit is holding me up on the mornings I stand.
- Verdict I passed on myself at the shelter, get out, in the name of Jesus. I am not maintenance and I am not a logistics problem; God has written that the righteous are never moved out of their place, and I am standing in my own place this morning with my dignity in my hands.
- Lord, You are underneath this carry at six oh two and again at two in the afternoon, and Your word says You sustain and do not move me off my place. Your Spirit is holding me up, so I am handing You the whole arithmetic at the corner today and getting on the bus. Whatever You do with it, You are good.
