The chapel is on the third floor, past the vending machines, behind a door that sighs shut on its own so it never bangs.
Six chairs. A window of colored glass with no picture in it, just shapes. A wooden lectern at the front with a spiral bound book open on it and a pen on a string, because people come in and write things, and other people come in later and read what they wrote and pray for strangers.
He went in at some hour that was not a real hour, the kind you get in a hospital where the lights never change. He had been upstairs a long time. He sat in the second row for a while and then he got up and went to the lectern, and he wrote the name in the book. Just the name. He did not write a request under it because he could not think of one he had not already made about forty times.
Then he stood there with the pen still in his hand and he said something, out loud or near enough, in an empty room.
He said: I am not going to ask You about this anymore.
He was not angry. That is the part that matters. He was not shaking his fist and he was not walking out on God. It was polite. It was the tone of a man resigning from a committee he has served on faithfully and can no longer serve on well. He said it the way you would hand in a key. And then he closed the book, and put the pen down on the string, and went down to the parking lot.
That was three years ago. He has kept it. Not once since, not out loud, not in his head, not at three in the morning. He prays about plenty of things. He has never gone back to that one, and there is something in him that is quietly proud of it, the way a man is proud of a promise nobody made him make.
He also still knows what page it is on.
That is you, perhaps. Your own chapel, your own version of the polite resignation. Maybe it was a car, or a hallway, or a bathroom with the faucet running so nobody would hear. You did not lose your faith. You filed one subject and closed the drawer, and you have been keeping your word about it ever since, and part of you thinks that is the most dignified thing you have ever done.
The agreement
I am going to say one thing before anything else and I want it in plain daylight.
The three years are not unbelief.
I am not going to call them that and I am not going to hint at it in gentler words. You did not go cold. You did not walk away. You stopped asking about one thing because asking about it had begun to cost more than you had, and a man who stops lifting a weight that is tearing something is not a man with a character problem. He is a man who noticed.
And I am not here to shame the silence, or to have you feel bad about a night in a chapel that was, as far as I can tell, one of the more honest things you have ever done. Nobody here failed to have enough faith. That sentence is not in the book and it is not true and it does not follow you up to the third floor.
So we are not going to relitigate the agreement. We are going to look at who was actually party to it.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28
You signed. He did not.
You are not in any trouble at all for the three years of quiet. Matthew 11:28 has no expiration on it and no clause about how recently a man last came, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old invitation still current in a room with a colored glass window and six chairs.
Come unto me has no clause in it
Read the invitation slowly, because the shape of it is the whole point.
Come unto me. Not come back, which would imply a record of your absence. Not come correctly. Not come with a better attitude, or a fresh reason, or an explanation for the gap. There is no application form and no re-entry interview, and there is nothing anywhere in that sentence about how many times you asked before or how you handled it when nothing came.
And look who it is addressed to. Everyone worn down and heavy laden. That is not the enthusiastic. That is the worn out. It is aimed precisely and specifically at the man who has been carrying something a long time and is not carrying it well anymore, which is to say it is aimed at whoever wrote a name in a book at four in the morning and put the pen down.
You have an invitation that was never withdrawn, and it did not lapse when you stopped using it. It is written in Matthew 11:28 in the present tense as an open door, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps it open, which is why three years of not walking through it changed nothing about the door.
Here is the honest thing, and it belongs right here. God heals. He heals bodies, and Scripture says it too plainly for me to blur it, and this site exists to say it out loud. And I do not promise you a result if you go back and ask again. I cannot and I will not, and no honest voice can. Asking again is not a technique and it is not a lever. We say what He said and the current is His. And if you ask tonight and nothing changes, that is not a verdict on you, and it does not mean the asking was foolish, and it does not put you back where you were three years ago.
I also want to say what I am not asking of you. I am not asking you to promise to keep asking. Not tonight, not tomorrow, not for a season. No commitment, no streak, no undertaking to be brave about it from now on. One sentence tonight is a whole thing in itself and it is allowed to be the only one. If you never say another, the door does not close.
And none of this stands against the people looking after your body. Keep your appointments. He is not competing with them.
Pride I have taken in keeping my word about this has no right to stay. Matthew 11:28 makes coming a matter of His welcome rather than my consistency, and it is His Spirit, not my track record, who carries a man back into a room he resigned from.
And one more thing, said straight. If the last three years have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself feeling that quitting one subject was practice for quitting others, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot sit in the second row with you. You deserve somebody who can.
So here is the turn, in the chapel, with the book still open on the lectern and the page number you never forgot.
It is already yours, the coming, and it asks you to promise nothing whatsoever about tomorrow. Matthew 11:28 is an open door with rest on the other side of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding it open, which is exactly why your three years of not walking through did it no damage at all.
I am not going to tell you what happens if you ask again. I said that already and I am saying it here, at the warmest point on the page, because this is where a promise would be easiest to slip in and worth the very least. He heals; the outcome is His and it was never mine to announce. Both of those are true in the same breath and I am not dropping either one to make this land harder.
You have a place to come to and nothing to file first, no explanation owed and no record to clear. It is written that He calls the worn out and the heavy laden by name, and it is His Spirit, not your resolve, who carries a man back up to the third floor.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting down, wherever you are. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you and the authority is His, delegated, and not something three years of silence has revoked. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries them, not the confidence in your voice tonight. What God does with this body is His to decide, and every line here is said under that, and nothing on this page promises a result or dates one. What is settled is that the invitation stayed open the whole time you were not using it.
- Agreement I made in a chapel three years ago, you are a real evening and you are not a contract God ever signed. Matthew 11:28 says come unto me, and there is no clause in it about how long I have been away.
- Pride I took in never asking again, you have been dressed as dignity for three years and you have no right to stay, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. It is written that He calls the heavy laden and gives them rest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries me back into the room, not my record of keeping my word.
- Lord, You said come unto me, and I am coming, tonight, about the one thing I filed and did not mention again. I thank You that Your Spirit held the door the whole time I was not using it, and I am saying my sentence and promising You nothing about tomorrow.
