It is held on by a magnet from a pizza place that closed two years ago, and it has been there three weeks, and it is the only thing on the fridge that is not a school letter.
She is getting the milk out when she looks at it properly. Thick card, the good kind, somebody's fortieth, a phone number handwritten at the bottom in blue. The date on it went by eleven days ago. She never replied. She meant to, then it got late, then it got embarrassing, and then it got past.
That is not the thing.
The thing is what she notices standing there with the fridge door open and the cold coming out at her: that this is the first invitation to be on this fridge in a very long time. She stands and works backward through the year to be sure. Spring, nothing. Winter, nothing. There was the thing in the fall that she said no to, and the two before it, and the lunch she canceled twice, and the wedding she never answered about at all.
Six. Six noes in a row, and the last two were not even real noes, they were nothing, which is worse.
And Dana is a kind woman and a considerate one. So Dana stopped asking. Not in a huff. Not to make a point. Just the way any thoughtful person eventually stops offering a chair to someone who keeps saying they would rather stand.
The fridge starts its hum. She closes the door.
Here is what she notices last, and it is the reason for this whole page. She is not upset about the parties. She could not care less about the parties. What has landed on her, in a kitchen, holding the milk, is that some part of her has been quietly going out of business for two years and there is no test for it, no letter about it, and no appointment where anybody asks.
That is you, perhaps, in front of your own fridge. Not in a crisis. Managing something in a body, competently, for a long time. And somewhere in the middle of the managing, something in the person doing the managing went quiet, and nobody wrote it down.
The wound nobody wrote down
There is a psalm that puts two things side by side that nobody would think to put together, and I want you to see them in the order they come.
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.Psalm 147:3
That is verse three. And then, without a paragraph break, without so much as a breath:
He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.Psalm 147:4
Read those two again in sequence. The same sentence structure. The same God, doing both, in the same list, at the same level of attention. He counts the stars and names every one of them, and He binds up the wound in a woman standing at a fridge, and the psalm does not think one of those is the impressive one.
And look at what verse three actually says He does. Not that He explains the wound. Not that He justifies it. He binds it up, which is what you do with a thing that is real and open and needs to be held together while it mends. Binding presumes an injury. You do not bandage a disappointment. You bandage a wound.
You have a real injury, not a mood, and it is named in Scripture as the kind God personally attends to. Psalm 147:3 is where it stands written, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a psalm about star counting and makes it land on a kitchen floor, which is why what happened to you these two years is not too small to bring anywhere.
Additional, and never instead of
Now I have to say something carefully, because this category gets misused more than any other on this site and I am not going to do that to you.
What follows is not a swap. I am not about to offer you a healed heart as compensation for a body that has not been healed. That trade gets offered constantly, in gentle voices, usually by people who mean well, and it is a small cruelty dressed as comfort: you asked for one thing, you did not get it, so here is a different thing, and now please be grateful and stop asking. No. You asked about a body. That request stands exactly where you left it, and nothing on this page revises it downward.
This is additional. Both things are on the table at once and neither cancels the other. Say it like this: the ask about your body is still an ask, and meanwhile there is an injury in the person carrying that body which is also real, also grievous to God, and also something He binds up. Two things. Not one thing renamed.
You are allowed to have both open at once, and neither one makes the other unfaithful. It is written in Psalm 147:3 that He binds the wound and in a hundred places that He heals the body, and it is the same Spirit at work in both, which is exactly why you never have to trade one for the other to get His attention.
And one more thing, plainly, because it belongs here. If the going quiet has gone further than quiet, if some part of you has stopped wanting to be here at all, tell a living person today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988, day or night. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one human being who will sit with you tonight. A page cannot do that. You deserve somebody in the room, and there is no shame in this paragraph anywhere.
The things that stop without being decided
Nobody decided this. That is what I most want you to hear.
There was no evening when you sat down and resolved to stop saying yes. You said no once because the timing was impossible, and again because of a tiredness that is hard to describe to people whose tiredness ends after a night, and again because the logistics of going somewhere had quietly become a project. Every single no was reasonable. Every one of them had a good reason attached. And six reasonable noes make a pattern that nobody chose, and a kind friend reads a pattern and adjusts, because that is what kind people do.
So let me take one thing off you before we go on. Dana did not stop asking because of a failure in you. She stopped because she was being considerate with the information she had. And you did not withdraw out of some hardness of heart that needs repenting of. You were carrying something with both arms and something had to be put down, and this is what got put down, and you did not see it go.
Nobody failed here. That word does not belong in this article, it is nowhere in the word of God near a person in your position, and His Spirit did not carry it into this kitchen.
You were not the one who let this go, and nobody is holding an account against you for it. Psalm 103:14 says He remembers our frame and knows we are dust, which is a sentence about being handled gently by someone who understands the material, and it is His Spirit who makes that a present kindness rather than a nice idea about God.
So here is the turn, in a kitchen, with the fridge humming and a piece of card under a dead pizza magnet.
Right now, as you read this, God is attending to the injury in you that no machine has ever been pointed at. Psalm 147:3 says He binds up wounds, and it is His Spirit who does the binding, closely and specifically, in the person and not only in the body.
And now the honest thing, both halves at once, here where the heat is highest, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and most dishonest.
God heals. He heals bodies, Scripture says it without apology, and this site exists because that is true. And I do not promise you the result. Not for the body, not for the friendships, not the timing, not the shape. I do not know and nobody honest does. We say what He said and the current is His to send. And if the body stays as it is, that is not a verdict on you, not on your faith, not on two years of anything, and anyone who says otherwise has stopped speaking for God. And I will say the other half again too, because it is the guardrail of this whole category: nothing He does inside you is offered as a replacement for what you asked about your body. Both stay on the table. Both are His.
You have not been swapped down to a smaller answer. It is written in Ephesians 3:20 that He does exceeding abundantly above what we ask, which is a sentence about more and never about instead, and it is His Spirit working in us that the verse names as the power doing it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the kitchen, with the fridge door shut. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His and was handed over in Him, and two quiet years have not reduced it. Scripture is the ground under every line and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them, not the conviction you feel while saying them, which may be very little tonight. What God does with this body is His to decide and I speak all three of these underneath that. Nothing here promises a result, puts a date on one, or offers you anything as a substitute for what you asked. What is settled is that He binds up wounds, and that this one is a wound.
- Invitation three weeks old on the fridge, you are a piece of card and you are not a verdict on who I am now. Psalm 147:3 says He binds up wounds, and this one is on the list.
- Conclusion that I am easy to stop asking, you arrived somewhere in the second year and you have no right to stay. Out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that He remembers my frame, and His Spirit is the one who has stayed in the room the whole time, which is the only opinion of me that decides anything.
- Lord, You heal bodies and You bind up people, and I am bringing You the second one tonight without taking the first one back. Your word names this a wound and Your Spirit is doing the binding, and what You do with this body is Yours and not mine to promise. I am saying the true sentence out loud now, to You, in this kitchen.
Psalm 147:3
