The list is on the back of an envelope, in pen, and she has added to it three times since Sunday.
It lives under the fruit bowl. Names down the left side and little marks beside them, and if you found it you would think it was a grocery run. It is not. It is the order in which people have to be told, and the marks are a whole language she invented without meaning to. A dot means in person. A circle means this one will cry. A line under a name means this one will be hurt if they hear it from somebody else first, so they have to come before the cousins. A small star, which she is not proud of, means this one will start suggesting things, and she will have to be gracious about every single suggestion.
She is at seventeen conversations now. She counted last night, sitting on the arm of the couch with a mug going cold beside her, and seventeen was the number that made her put the mug down.
Because every one of those conversations went the same way. She said the words carefully, because she had learned by the third telling to say them in the order that hurts least. Then the other person's face did what faces do. And then, every time, without exception, she was the one who reached across the table. She was the one who said it is going to be all right. She was the one who found something reassuring to add so that her sister could stop crying, so that her friend from work could stop apologizing, so that her mother could go to bed.
She loves all of them. That is the thing nobody understands about this. It is not resentment. It is that love handed her a job, and the job is real work, and she has now done it seventeen times, and she is the only person in the entire arrangement whose face nobody had to manage.
And she is tired. Not the tired the appointments ask about. Not the tired that gets written on a form. Tired somewhere further in than that, in a room nobody has ever knocked on, where a woman keeps a list under a fruit bowl and does the seventeenth version of the worst conversation of her life and then goes to load the dishwasher.
That is you, perhaps, with your own envelope. You know exactly who is left to tell and roughly what each of them is going to do. And there is a tiredness in you that no appointment has ever had a question for.
The labor nobody has thanked you for
Let me name the work first, because it has never been named to you, and a thing that has never been named cannot be put down.
You have been doing emotional labor at scale, in the middle of the hardest stretch of your own life, for an audience of people who love you and have no idea. Every telling required you to choose your words for their sake. Every telling required you to be composed enough that the other person could fall apart. Every telling ended with you comforting the comforter and then going and standing in the kitchen for a minute before rejoining.
That is not a complaint and it is not a character flaw. Frankly it is a mercy you have shown seventeen people, and most of them will never know they received it. But it is work, it has a cost, and the cost has been coming out of a place that nobody has audited.
You have a tiredness that is a real subject, and God has never once required you to manage it for His sake. That is not sentiment; it is written into Psalm 103:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written and lets a tired woman actually believe it in her own kitchen.
Here is the line.
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.Psalm 103:14
Knoweth our frame. Not our performance, our composure or our best telling. Our frame: the actual made thing, the structure, what we are built out of and where it gives. And then, in case that were not enough, He remembers what we are made of, and the word for it in that psalm is dust.
You were made, and He knows the frame He made, and He has never forgotten what it is made of. That is written, and His Spirit says it over you as mercy, never as a verdict on you.
What this is, and what it is not
Now I have to be exact with you, because this category is where careless writers do real damage, and I am not going to do it.
I am not offering you a healed inside as compensation for a body that has not been healed. That would be a swap, and a swap is what happens when somebody quietly changes the subject at the end of a page so they can call it a win. This is not that. God heals bodies. He does it still, He has never stopped, and Scripture on that is plain and I will not soften it or spiritualize it into a metaphor to make my job easier. And I do not promise you an outcome. I will not tell you what happens next with your body, because the day I promise it I have made your body the evidence for my sentence, and it is not mine to promise. What He does there is His to decide, and He is good in either case.
What I am telling you is that there is a second room, and it also has damage in it, and He is at work in there too. Not instead. As well.
This is yours alongside your body and never in place of it. The word does not offer one as a substitute for the other, and His Spirit is not in the business of trading you a smaller thing while you are looking the other way.
And one more thing, because I mean it. If the managing has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking everybody on that list would have an easier time of it without you, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. Do not put it on the list for later. You deserve a person in the room, and this is exactly the kind of thing that must not be handled alone.
So here is the turn, and it is not another job for you.
There is exactly one face in your life that you have never had to manage. He does not need to be eased into it. He does not need your words chosen in the order that hurts least. He does not fall apart and require comforting, He does not start suggesting things, and He will never need you to be composed so that He can cope with your news.
It is already settled that He knows your frame and remembers you are dust, and He says it as mercy and not as a criticism. That is written down in Psalm 103:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it past your composure and into the room where you actually live.
You are allowed to be as tired as you are. In front of Him, unedited, with nothing arranged.
Declare this over yourself
You have the standing to speak these because Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and never earned by you. Every line stands on Scripture, which is why it carries authority rather than mood; the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, not how steady you sound; and what God does with this body is His to decide, so nothing here promises you a result or a date.
- List of names on the back of an envelope, you are a job that love handed me and you are not who I am. Psalm 103:14 says He knows my frame and remembers I am dust, and His Spirit says it over me as mercy and never as a verdict.
- Idea that my tiredness is not a subject, get out, in the name of Jesus. God knows the frame He made and has never asked me to arrange my face before speaking to Him, so the true sentence gets said out loud in this house tonight.
- Father, You are the one face I have never had to manage, and Your word says You remember what I am made of. Your Spirit is in this room while I sit here as tired as I actually am, and I am not editing it for You. Whatever You do with this body, You are good, and I am staying here unarranged.
