Still HeldIsaiah 49:16

The Long Table After the Guests

This message is for I have asked God the same thing at the same table for nine years and nothing has moved. I want to be able to stay near Him without somebody handing me a verdict, and without being told what the nine years were for.

The last guest leaves a little after midnight. Fadi walks him to the gate, waits until the footsteps have turned the corner, and comes back into the courtyard, which is suddenly very large.

The long table is still down the middle of it, under the lamp on the wall and the strung bulbs he put up years ago and has never taken down. There are plates at odd angles. There is a jug with an inch of water left. There is the chair somebody pulled sideways to sit closer to somebody else, and the bread board with nothing on it but crumbs and a knife, and a fig stem, and a napkin folded into a small hard square by whoever always does that.

He does not clear it yet. He stands at the end of the table with his hands on the back of a chair, and then he pulls it out and sits down.

And he says it. The same sentence he has said at this table for nine years. Not loudly. It has gone smooth from use, the way a stone in a pocket goes smooth, all the edges rubbed off it, until saying it costs him nothing and moves nothing and he says it anyway, the way a man locks a door.

Nine years. There have been good stretches and bad ones. There have been evenings when he said it with tears and evenings when he said it with his mind already on the water bill. Tonight he says it and notices, with a kind of tired honesty he would not use out loud in front of anybody, that he no longer expects the saying to do anything.

He is not bitter. He would be embarrassed by the word. He still opens this house every week, and he still cooks too much, and he still puts out the extra chairs. He simply stopped, at some point he could not name, expecting the sentence to change the situation.

Then he sits a while longer in the quiet, with the lamp buzzing and a moth at it, and he does not get up.

That is you, perhaps. At your own table, after your own guests, with a sentence worn so smooth you can no longer feel it in your mouth.

A sentence worn smooth

I want to say the honest thing first, because you would smell it if I did not.

I am not going to explain the nine years to you. I do not know what they are for. I do not know why the same words went up from the same chair and the situation stayed where it is, and neither does anybody who offers you a reason for it in a warm voice. There is no missing key here. There is no sentence you failed to say correctly, no door you left locked, no order of words that would have worked. If somebody has already handed you one of those, they were guessing, and their guess cost you something.

What I can do is tell you where Fadi is sitting, and Who is at the table with him.

There is a moment in Isaiah where a whole city says out loud what you have been too polite to say. The Lord has forsaken me, Zion says. My Lord has forgotten me. That is not an unbeliever talking. That is the covenant people, saying the exact sentence you have been swallowing at your own table for nine years, and God did not correct their manners. He answered them.

He said a nursing mother might forget her child, which is close to impossible, and even if she did, He would not forget. And then He said something stranger and better.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:16

Graven. Not written. Not remembered. Cut in, the way a mason cuts a name, permanent and costly and impossible to smooth away with time or with silence or with nine years of nothing happening.

You are graven on the palms of God tonight, and the years have not sanded that away. Isaiah 49:16 is where that stands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and lays it against a real man in a real courtyard at midnight. That is not my opinion about your situation. It is His word about His hands.

Graven is not the same as remembered

Look at the second half of the verse, because it is the half that fits a long wait.

Thy walls are continually before me. Those walls were rubble. That is the whole point of the picture. God is not saying He keeps a photograph of the finished city on His desk and is waiting for the real one to catch up. He is saying the broken, unfinished, still-not-rebuilt thing is what is continually in front of His eyes. He looks at it. He does not look away from it, and He does not look past it toward a better version of you that has not arrived.

That matters at a table like Fadi's, because the fear underneath a long wait is almost never theological. It is social. It is the suspicion that you have become a slightly awkward case. That God is fond of you but has moved you politely down the list. That He is dealing with the urgent people and will circle back.

You have a place in front of the eyes of God that your unfinished walls do not disqualify you from. The word says those walls are continually before Him, and the Spirit of God is not embarrassed by a situation that has gone on a long time. He is not managing a waiting room.

And notice what the verse does not do, because this is where a lot of writing goes wrong. It does not tell Zion when. It does not tell her what the delay was for. It does not hand her a lesson to extract so the years feel productive. It tells her whose hands she is cut into. That is what God chose to say to a people in a long silence, and He chose it on purpose.

You were not moved down a list, and no explanation you were handed for the silence has the authority of what is written here. Isaiah 49:16 says the hands, the palms, the walls, continually, and the Holy Spirit still speaks that over people whose sentence has gone smooth from use.

The breakthrough

Let me put both halves of this down in front of you at the same time, because taking one without the other is how people get hurt.

God heals. Scripture says it and I believe it and I have no interest in trimming it into something modest so that nobody is disappointed with me. And I am not going to promise you a result, not tonight, not on a date, not in any shape. That promise is not mine to make and it was never mine to make. We flip the switch. He sends the current. A page that hands you a guarantee has stolen something from you rather than given you something.

So here is the turn, and it is smaller and better than a guarantee. You are not being asked to feel that God is near before you stay near Him. Fadi is not waiting for a feeling. He is sitting at the table, and the fact that he is still sitting there after nine years is not evidence that God has ignored him. It is evidence that Somebody has kept him coming back to the chair, and that Somebody is not neutral about him.

And I am not going to rename what you asked for. What you asked for is what you asked for. Being held is not a smaller thing handed to you instead. It is what is true while you ask.

Right now, as you read this, you are held, and nine years of quiet did not loosen the grip. The palms in Isaiah 49:16 are not a metaphor for a mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that word land on a man at midnight with crumbs on the table in front of him.

Declare this over yourself

You have the standing to say these out loud because Christ is in you, and the ground under them is Scripture, not the number of years you have put in at this table. The Holy Spirit carries them, not the steadiness of your voice. And what God does with this body is His to decide; nothing here dates a result or promises you one.

  1. Long table in the courtyard, you are a place I keep and not a record of what God has not done. Isaiah 49:16 says my name is cut into His palms, and hands like that do not lose a table. I am pulling out the chair and sitting down at you again tonight.
  2. Suspicion I have carried since the fourth year, get off this table in the name of Jesus. My walls are continually before Him and the Holy Spirit did not walk me nine years to a chair God had stopped visiting. Get off, and take the list you invented with you.
  3. Lord, You are the One who cut my name into Your palms and left my broken walls in front of Your eyes. Your Spirit is at this table with me and nine years of the same sentence has never once wearied You. Whatever You do with this body, I am straightening the chairs and sitting back down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
