The back room of the bookshop smells like paper and glue and the dust that comes off the tops of hardbacks nobody has opened since the sixties, and he likes it in there better than out front.
Tuesday, three days a week, since he cut his hours. There is a card table, a folding chair with a cushion tied to it, an electric kettle on a shelf with a mug beside it, and four boxes in from a house clearance out on the county road. His job is simple and he is good at it. Check the spine, check the hinge, check the pages for foxing and water and pencil, price it, put it on the cart for out front.
He is halfway down the second box when he opens a green hardback to look at the gutter, and a slip of paper drops out into his lap.
It is the torn top corner of an envelope. It is his own handwriting. There is a date on it, and under the date, four words.
He knows the date. He knows exactly what he was asking about in that month, in that year, and he knows precisely what he meant by the four words, because he would mean the same four words if he wrote them again this afternoon. Nothing about the thing has moved. Not toward, not away. The years went by and the four words stayed accurate, which is the part that sits on his chest.
The kettle clicks off behind him and he does not get up.
Then he does something he could not explain to you if you asked him. He does not throw the slip away. He does not fold it into his wallet. He puts it back into the green hardback, at the same page it fell out of, closes the book on it, prices the book, and sets it on the cart. Then he makes the tea and starts on the next one.
That is you, perhaps, in your own back room, holding your own handwriting. You know the year. You could still say the four words. And somewhere between then and now you learned to hold the thing without expecting an answer, and you are not sure any more whether that is faith or a wound that healed crooked.
What He said before anybody heard Him say it
There is a sentence in Exodus that I have never gotten over, and the thing that undoes me is not what it says. It is when it is said.
Israel had been in Egypt a very long time. Long enough that the ones who first cried out were dead and their grandchildren were crying out. Then, at a bush on the far side of a wilderness, out of nowhere, God opens His mouth about it.
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;Exodus 3:7
Read the tenses. Not I am about to look into this. Not I will start paying attention now that somebody has finally got My ear. I have surely seen. I have heard. I know. Everything in that sentence had already happened before the bush ever caught fire, which means every single year those people spent thinking nobody was watching was a year they were being watched closely by the God who was already saying this to Himself.
I am not going to tell you why it took as long as it took. The text does not tell us either, and the men who claim to know are guessing out loud in a voice they borrowed. What the text does tell us is what He was doing the entire time with His eyes and His ears, and I would rather hand you a true thing about His attention than an invented thing about His timing.
You are seen right now with the same three verbs, and it did not begin the day somebody finally said something comforting to you about it. Exodus 3:7 is written down where anybody can check it, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence spoken at a bush and lays it across a back room and a green hardback and four words in your own hand.
What we are not going to do with the years
Now let me clear some things out of this room, because they get left here by well meaning people and they are heavy.
There is no key you have failed to turn. Nobody is holding out on you until you find the right phrasing, the unremembered sin, the missing posture, the correct name for the thing. The whole shape of Exodus 3 is a God who moved first, at a bush a man had not gone looking for, about a cry nobody had managed to get delivered. If there had been a key, the text would have handed it over, and it does not, because there is not one.
And it is not that you failed to believe. Somebody has implied it to you, gently, in that voice, and let me deny it in the same line they said it in: nobody in this room is short of enough faith, and nothing has been withheld from you for want of it. That sentence is not in the book. It is not true. It has been said over more sickbeds than I can stand to think about, and every time it is said it does a wound that takes longer to close than the waiting did.
One more thing I will not do, and I want you to hold me to it. I am not going to quietly change the subject at the end of this page. Some articles like this one start out about a body and finish about serenity, so the reader can be told they have been answered after all, just in a different currency. No. You asked about the thing you asked about. It is still the thing. We are keeping it in the room.
So here are both halves, together, where the heat is. God heals. I will not soften it, because Scripture does not soften it and this site was built to say it out loud: He heals, He heals bodies, and it is His character and not a rumor. And I do not promise you the result, not on this page, not on any page. I cannot and I will not. We say what He has already said and the current is His to send.
You are held in an unanswered thing right now, and that holding was never made conditional on a verdict arriving. Exodus 3:7 is the written ground under that and nothing in it waits on an outcome, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the holding rather than your own ability to keep a grip on this.
And because I would rather say this too early than too late: if the years have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking that everybody would have an easier time of it without you, tell one living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can be in the room with you tonight. A page cannot do that part, and you deserve a person beside you.
So, here, with your own handwriting in your hand.
Nothing about the thing changed today and I am not going to pretend it did. The slip of paper still says what it said. The years are still the number of years they are. If anyone has told you this page would fix that, they oversold me.
What is true is the sentence at the bush, and it has been true the entire time, including the years you were sure of the opposite.
You are not disqualified, this is not your fault, and none of it is a verdict He handed down about you. Exodus 3:7 shows the seeing and the hearing and the knowing all finished and in the past tense before a single person in Egypt knew any of it, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries that same attention into your ordinary Tuesday.
Both halves again, right here, because this is where a promise would be easiest and cheapest. He heals, and I do not promise you the result. I do not know what He is going to do with your body and neither does anyone who tells you they do. He is good and He is not slow the way we count slow, and I will not date anything for Him.
You have a place to stand that is not conditional on a verdict, and it is already yours in Christ. That is what is written about everyone in Him, and His Spirit is what holds a person steady in an unanswered thing, not the strength of their grip.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, wherever you are, with the slip of paper or without it. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority is His and delegated, not something you have earned by lasting this long. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit carries the words, not the force of your voice or the steadiness of your feelings. What God does with this body is His to decide, and every line is said under that. Nothing here promises you a result and nothing here dates one. What is settled is that He has seen, and heard, and known, and that He has not moved away from you.
- Slip of paper in my own handwriting, you are a record of a long ask and you are not a record of a refusal. Exodus 3:7 says He had surely seen it before anybody in Egypt heard Him say so, and He has seen mine.
- Conclusion I came to somewhere in the fourth year, get out in the name of Jesus. The idea that silence is God's verdict on me, and that I am the reason nothing has moved, is not from Him and it is not staying in this room. It is written that He heard a cry nobody had managed to deliver, and His Spirit is the one who has kept me company since, not my own grip on the thing.
- Lord, You have seen this, You have heard it, and You know my sorrows better than my own handwriting does. Your word is what I am standing on and Your Spirit is what holds me here, and what You do with this body is Yours and never mine to promise. I am still asking, and I am staying in the room.
