Ask AgainPsalm 65:2

The Chairs She Stacks After Prayer

This message is for the Wednesday night when you have just told somebody else to keep asking and meant every word of it, and you are stacking the chairs alone afterward and realize you took your own name off the list a long time ago and have never once put those two facts beside each other

She stacks them eight to a stack, and she is the only one who knows that, because she is the only one who ever does it.

Wednesday, twenty past nine, the back room of the church with the low ceiling and the good radiator. Everyone has gone. The coffee urn is ticking as it cools. On the folding table there is a shoebox with a slot cut in the lid, a jar of pens, and eleven small cards with other people's handwriting on them, some of them folded twice by people who did not want their request read on the way into the box. The overhead light hums a little. Outside, somebody's car door closes and an engine starts and pulls out of the lot.

She works down the row. Fold, lift, carry, set, and the chairs go up in eights against the wall by the cupboard.

It was a good night. Nine people, which is more than usual. She prayed for four of them out loud with her hand on their back, which is her way. And near the end there was a young woman she has known since that young woman was thirteen, who said, with her chin going, that she does not know if there is any point asking anymore.

And she said to her: keep asking. She said it twice. She said, He hears you, sweetheart, He is not tired of you, keep asking. And she meant every syllable of it. She would say it again right now.

She is on the eleventh chair when it arrives.

She has not asked for herself in a long time. Not once. Not for that. She could not tell you the day she stopped, because there was no day; there was no decision, no crisis of faith, no moment where she folded her arms at God. She just, sometime in the fourth or fifth year, quietly took her own name off the list. And she went on praying for everybody else, with real warmth, in this room, every Wednesday, and she has never once in all those years put those two facts side by side.

She sets the chair down on top of the stack and stands there with her hand still on it.

That is you, perhaps, with your own eleventh chair. You are the one who tells people not to give up. You mean it, and it is not hypocrisy, and I am not going to let anybody call it that. It is only that somewhere along the way you stopped bringing your own thing, and you have never let yourself look at that in a lit room.

What the stopping actually was

Before anything else, I want to say what your silence was not, because you have been braced for somebody to name it, and the name they usually reach for is wrong.

It was not unbelief. It was not backsliding. It was not you giving up on God, and it was certainly not you failing to have enough faith; that sentence is not in the book, it is not true, and nobody gets to say it over you here. What it was, most likely, is this: asking cost you something every time, and after a certain number of times the cost got higher than you could keep paying, and a tired person quietly stopped lifting the thing that was heaviest. That is not rebellion. That is a woman protecting a part of herself that had been out in the weather too long.

And notice that you never stopped praying. You stopped asking for you. Those are different, and the difference is the whole shape of this page.

Here is what David called God, in a line so short you could miss it.

O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.Psalm 65:2

Read the first half as a name, because that is what it is. Not thou that answers on schedule. Not thou that grants the ones we phrase correctly. O thou that hearest prayer: hearing prayer is what He is like, the way warmth is what fire is like. It is not a service He was providing during the years you were asking and withdrew when you went quiet.

You were not disqualified by the silence, and nothing in those years took your name off anything. Psalm 65:2 is written, His Spirit is the one who keeps making it true in rooms like this one, and neither the written word nor the Spirit ever noted your absence as a strike against you.

Coming back is not starting over

Now the second half of the verse, which is the part that opens the door.

Unto thee shall all flesh come. All flesh. Not the consistent. Not the ones who kept a record. All flesh means the whole crowd of human beings in every condition they arrive in, and that crowd has always included the ones who stopped for four years and then came back in on a Wednesday with their coat still on.

So there is no penalty here, and I want to be very precise about that, because you are braced for one. You do not owe God an explanation for where you have been. You do not have to open with an apology. You do not have to account for the years, name the day you stopped, or promise Him that this time you will keep it up. I am not going to ask you to promise that either, and if anybody has made returning conditional on a promise like that, they were adding something the verse does not contain.

You have a name for God that does not depend on the answer: the One who hears prayer. That is written in Psalm 65:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that name close enough to say out loud in an empty room at twenty past nine.

And let me put the two true things together in one breath, because this category is exactly where a careless writer would promise you something to get you asking again. God heals. He does it still, in real bodies, and Scripture on that is plain and I am not going to blur it. And I do not promise you an outcome, tonight or ever. Not because I doubt Him, but because promising it would make your body the proof of my sentence, and it would put you back in the place that made you stop asking in the first place. What He does is His to decide, and He is good in either case. What is on offer here is not a guaranteed answer. It is the door, and the door was never locked.

Shame has no right to stay in the doorway of a God whose own word says all flesh comes to Him. The Spirit who drew you back to this thought tonight is not the one making you feel you have to explain yourself first.

And one more thing, because I mean it. If the long quiet of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have found yourself thinking that the people in that room would carry on fine without you, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. Do not stack this one and go home. You deserve a person beside you, and asking for that is not a failure of anything.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a demand.

You told that young woman the truth. He hears her. He is not tired of her. Every word of it was accurate, and you have been saying accurate things about God to other people for years while quietly living as though there were an exception with your name on it. There is no exception. There never was one drawn up.

It is already settled that He hears prayer, and He did not stop being that in the years you were quiet. Psalm 65:2 is written and it does not carry a clause about how recently you last came; the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into this room tonight, past the shame, to the actual person holding the eleventh chair.

You are not being asked to become someone who asks every day now. You are being handed permission for tonight. That is all. Tonight is enough.

Declare this over yourself

You have the standing to speak these because Christ is in you, and it was given to you rather than earned by you. Every line stands on Scripture, which is what makes it authority rather than nerve; the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, not how long you have been away; and what God does with this body is His to decide, so nothing below promises you a result or a date.

  1. Stack of eleven chairs in an empty room, you are the end of somebody else's prayer meeting and you are not the end of mine. Psalm 65:2 calls God the One who hears prayer, and His Spirit has held that door open through every year I did not walk through it.
  2. Fear of a second silence, get out, in the name of Jesus. I am a woman who is allowed to ask for her own body; the word says all flesh comes to the God who hears, and I am walking back in tonight without explaining where I have been.
  3. Lord, You are the One who hears prayer, and that is Your name and not a service You were running while I kept up. Your Spirit brought me back to this at the eleventh chair, and Your word says all flesh comes to You, so I am sitting down in this room and asking You for myself tonight. Whatever You do with it, You are good.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
