It is a quarter past nine and he is sitting at his own kitchen table with his coat on.
He heard it at half past five, standing in his brother's driveway with the truck door open and the engine still running because he had only stopped by to drop off a socket set. His brother said what the letter said. Said it fast, the way you say a thing you have practiced in the mirror so it will come out level. Then they stood there a while and talked about the socket set.
He drove home. Came in the back door. His wife had soup on and the kitchen light was on over the table, and she looked up and knew from his face and did not ask yet.
And he sat down. With his coat on.
That was three and a half hours ago. The soup got eaten. The bowl got cleared. Somebody's phone rang and got answered. And the coat is still on him, and he could not tell you why in a sentence he would be willing to say out loud.
But here is why, and he half knows it. Taking the coat off would mean the evening had started. And if his evening starts, then he has gone on with his life while that letter sits on a counter eleven miles away with his brother's name on it. So the coat stays on. It is the only thing he can think of to do that costs him something, and costing him something feels, tonight, exactly like love.
His wife comes past and puts her hand on the back of his neck for a second and goes on by. She does not mention the coat.
That is you, perhaps, at your own table, in your own coat, or with your phone face up beside you, or standing in a kitchen at nine at night with the dish towel in your hand and no plan to move. You did not get the news. You got given the news, which is a different thing and heavier than people know. And somewhere in the last few hours you started to believe that putting it down for one evening would be a way of loving them less.
The coat
I want to say the first thing very carefully, because you are not in a state to be argued with tonight and I am not going to try.
You are not doing anything wrong. Nothing about the coat is a fault. The coat is what love does when it has nowhere to put itself down. It is the same instinct that made you drive eleven miles with a socket set you could have handed over next week.
And I am not going to tell you to stop caring, or to draw a boundary, or any of the tidy things people say to a man who is carrying somebody. You are supposed to be carrying him. That is not the problem. Look at what Paul says, in the same chapter where he says something that seems to contradict it.
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2
Bear one another's burdens. That is an instruction, not a warning. Getting under somebody else's weight is not codependence and it is not a failure of trust. It is named, right there, as the way the law of Christ actually gets fulfilled, which is a large thing to say about a man sitting in a coat.
You are not loving him less by taking your coat off. Galatians 6:2 puts the bearing on you and never once puts the outcome there, and it is the Holy Spirit who can tell those two apart in a kitchen at nine at night when you cannot.
Two different words for a load
Now look three verses on, because Paul writes what looks like the opposite and is not.
Verse two says bear one another's burdens. Verse five says every man shall bear his own burden. Same chapter, and the plain reading has them fighting. They are not fighting, because they are two different words for two different things.
The one in verse two is a crushing weight, the kind that flattens a man, the kind two people get under together. The one in verse five is a soldier's own pack. Every man carries his own pack. Nobody can carry it for him, and trying to takes something off him he needs to be able to say he did.
So here is the line, and it is the whole article. You were called to get under the weight. You were never called to become the man. You cannot carry his pack, you cannot carry the letter, and you cannot carry the outcome, and the reason you cannot carry the outcome is that it was never in the pile to begin with. It has never at any moment been yours. Not tonight, not in the driveway, not in any prayer you have prayed since.
You have been carrying something you were genuinely called to carry, and you were never handed the result along with it. It is written, in Galatians 6:2 and 6:5 sitting three verses apart, and it is His Spirit who keeps the seam between them clear when love keeps trying to smudge it.
Now hear the honest thing, and it goes here because this is where the pressure is worst. God heals. He heals bodies, your brother's included, and Scripture says it too plainly for me to soften it, and this site exists to say it in daylight. And I do not promise you a result for him. I cannot and I will not. We say what God said and we leave the current to Him.
And this next part I will say slowly. No amount of praying longer buys a better answer. Not a harder prayer, not an all night one, not a better worded one, not a more desperate one. If you have been quietly negotiating, adding hours, keeping a coat on as a kind of down payment, hear me: there is no such transaction and there never was. Idea that a longer prayer would have bought a better answer has no right to stay. Galatians 6:2 asks you to bear and not to buy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries what you pray, so the weight of it was never resting on your endurance.
And whatever comes, it will not have been because you failed. Nobody in this kitchen failed to have enough faith. That sentence is not in the book, it is not true, and it is not allowed at this table.
None of this stands against the people caring for his body either. He should keep his appointments and so should you. The God you are handing him to is not in competition with them.
And one more thing, because I mean it. If carrying this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking everyone would have an easier time of it without you in the room, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. Carrying somebody does not mean you are not allowed to be carried. You deserve a person beside you.
So here is the turn, at the table, with the soup gone and the light still on.
It is already settled who holds the outcome for your brother, and it was never handed to you, not once, not for a minute this evening. Galatians 6:2 gives you the weight and stops there, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries what you have been praying, which is why your endurance was never what it rested on.
I am not going to tell you what that letter turns into. I said so already and I am saying it here, at the warmest point of the page, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and worth the least. He heals; the outcome is His, and it is not mine to announce and never was yours to secure. Both halves are true and I am holding both of them in front of you at once.
You have permission to eat your supper, sleep in your bed, and love him just as much in the morning. It is written that we bear one another's burdens, and it is His Spirit, not your wakefulness, who is holding your brother through the night.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at your own table, coat off. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you and the authority is His, delegated, and not earned by how long you have stayed awake. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries them, not the force of your voice at this hour. What God does with your brother's body is His to decide, and every line here is said under that, and nothing on this page promises a result or dates one. What is settled is that the bearing was yours and the outcome never was.
- Coat I have had on since half past five, you are wool and a doorway and you are not a way of loving him. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, and it never once said carry them in place of God.
- Idea that setting this down is a betrayal, you have had my whole evening and you have no right to stay, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. It is written that every man bears his own pack and that we get under one another's weight, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying what I have prayed, so this never rested on how late I sat up.
- Lord, You carry him better than I do and You have not put me down either, and I am handing him to You out loud tonight with his name in my mouth. I thank You that Your Spirit holds him while I sleep, and I am hanging my coat on the hook and coming back to this in the morning.
