Praying Over ThemJob 42:10

The Second Paddle on the Bench

This message is for sitting four feet from the man you have been praying for silently for eleven weeks, sanding his paddle because his hands cannot, with his name going round in your mouth and no idea at all what you are actually allowed to say out loud over another man's body

The canoe house is open along the whole water side and the wind comes straight through it, so by four in the afternoon the light is coming in sideways and everything in there has a long shadow. Concrete floor, sand tracked across it. A hull up on trestles. Rope, a coffee can of screws, two folding chairs that have been in that spot longer than anybody remembers.

Two men on the bench. One of them is sanding a paddle.

It is not his. His own is finished and leaning by the door. This is the second one, the one with the initials burned into the throat, and the man those initials belong to is sitting four feet away with a rag in his hands, doing the part he can still do, which is wiping down what gets handed to him.

They have been friends thirty one years. They do this every Thursday. They talk about the wind and the hull and somebody's grandson and whether the tide is going to be any good on the weekend, and it is a good hour, and both of them look forward to it all week.

And underneath every one of those Thursdays for eleven weeks now, the man with the sandpaper has been saying his friend's name.

Not out loud. In his head, on the drive over, in the shower, lying in the dark at two in the morning with his wife asleep beside him. Just the name, mostly, going round and round, because he does not know what to put after it. He has never once said a single word out loud over that man about his body. Not with him there. Not on the phone. Not ever.

It is not shyness. He would step in front of a truck for him. It is that he genuinely does not know what he is permitted to say. Is he allowed to ask straight out? Is that presumptuous? Is he supposed to say something over him, like a command, and if he does and nothing happens, has he made it worse? And underneath all of that, the one he would never say to a living soul: if this does not turn, will part of it come back to how hard I prayed?

So he sands. Long strokes, with the grain, and the dust comes off pale and settles on the concrete in the sideways light. And the name goes round.

That is you, perhaps, on your own bench, with somebody else's gear in your hands. You have carried a name for weeks. You have never said it out loud in the room. And somewhere in there you have quietly taken out a loan against the outcome, in your own name, without ever telling anybody you signed for it.

Who does which part

Let me take the hardest question first, because it is the one under all the others: what are you actually allowed to say over another person's body?

Here is the honest answer, and it is smaller and freer than you fear. You are allowed to say over him what God has already said. That is the whole permission and it is a wide one. You may take a written line and speak it out, with his name in it, in his hearing or out of it. You may ask plainly and directly for his body, in ordinary words, without decorating it. You may bless him out loud.

And here is the boundary, and it protects you as much as it protects him. You do not command another man's will, ever. Not his believing, not his decisions, not his choices about his own care. You speak to fear, to dread, to the silence, to the thing pressing on him. You bless the person and you address the mountain, and you never get those two the wrong way round.

Now the book of Job, which is where a man in your seat should be sitting anyway.

And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.Job 42:10

Two chapters before that verse, God had told those same three friends to go to Job, and He said something about the arrangement that I want you to hear very carefully. He said my servant Job shall pray for you, for him will I accept. Job prays. God accepts. Those are two different jobs held by two different parties, and the second one was never on Job's side of the bench.

You have exactly one part in this, and the asking is all of it. Job 42:10 has a man doing the praying while the LORD does the turning, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries the asking, which is why the effectiveness of it was never a function of your vocabulary.

The loan you signed for at two in the morning

Now the pit, and it is the one that has you sanding in silence.

Somewhere in the eleven weeks you took on the result. Nobody asked you to. There was no moment where it was handed over. It came in the way these things come in, at two in the morning, in a thought that went something like: if I had prayed more, or better, or longer, or with more of whatever it is other people seem to have. And once that thought has been in the room, praying out loud gets dangerous, because now every word you say is a word you can be billed for later.

So let me cut that up while we are both looking at it.

Nobody failed to have enough faith on that bench. Not you, not him. That sentence is not in Job and it is not in the mouth of God, and the three men in that story who tried to explain a suffering man to himself were the ones God corrected, not the suffering man. If somebody has handed you a version of it in a kind voice, put it down on the concrete and leave it there.

Responsibility for the result has no right to stay on your shoulders, and it never had standing there. It is written that the LORD turned it and not that Job turned it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that division of labor a weight actually coming off a man rather than a sentence he agrees with and keeps carrying.

And this one, because you are also tired, and nobody has said that out loud either. Eleven weeks of Thursdays and drives and two in the morning is real work, and being worn out by loving somebody is not a spiritual failure, it is the cost of the loving. If it has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking everyone would have an easier time without you in the middle of it, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot take a shift. You deserve somebody who can.

The breakthrough

So here is what stands, on the bench, with the dust settling in the sideways light.

God heals. He heals bodies, He has not changed the subject, and the man four feet from you with the rag in his hands is not a lost cause or an old case or somebody God has moved past. I say that plainly because Scripture says it plainly.

And in the same breath, because this page would be a liar if it dropped either half: I do not promise you his outcome. Not his, not yours. I do not know what God is going to do with that body and neither does anybody who tells you they do, and a longer prayer or a harder one does not move that needle, because the needle was never on your side of the bench. We say what He has said, and He sends the current, and He has never once billed a friend for the result.

You are free to open your mouth over him now, with nothing riding on your performance. Job 42:10 puts the turning in the LORD's hands, and it is His Spirit who carries a plain sentence from a canoe house on a Thursday, which is why it does not need to be eloquent to be heard.

You have thirty one years of friendship and full permission to use your voice inside it. It is written that Job prayed for his friends and that God accepted him, and the same Spirit is in you, so the asking you have done silently for eleven weeks has been landing the whole time.

Declare this over yourself

Say these on the bench, or in the car, or wherever your hands finally came off it. You have the standing because Christ is in you, and the authority is His and delegated, never something eleven weeks of faithfulness earned. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries them, not the effort you put behind them. What God does with his body and with yours is His to decide, and every line below is spoken under that, and nothing here promises an outcome for him or for you and nothing here dates one.

  1. Second paddle on the bench, you are a good blade waiting on a hand, and I am asking out loud over the man who owns you. Job 42:10 has a man praying for his friends with nothing settled in his own life, and that is exactly where I am sitting.
  2. Loan I signed at two in the morning, you are the idea that the result is billed to me, and I tear you up in the name of Jesus. It is written that the LORD turned the captivity and Job did the praying, and the Holy Spirit carries what I ask, so my shoulders are free while my mouth stays open.
  3. Jesus, You accepted a man's prayer for his friends and You did the turning Yourself, and I am putting his name in front of You out loud today instead of only in my head. Your Spirit makes Your word live in me, and what You do with his body is Yours to decide, and my hands are palm up on this bench and they are staying that way.
