Praying Over ThemNumbers 6:24

The Same Words Every Friday

This message is for eleven years of standing behind your father's chair on a Friday evening with your hands over his head saying the same blessing, and the drive home lately when you have started wondering whether any of it has counted for anything at all

It happens after the meal and before the dishes, in the front room, and it takes about twenty seconds.

His father sits in the good chair, the one with the worn place on the right arm where his hand has gone for thirty years. His mother stands in the doorway with a dish towel over her shoulder and does not come in and does not leave. The kitchen light is on behind her and the front room lamp is on beside the chair, and between the two of them the room is the color of a held breath.

He stands behind the chair and puts both hands just above his father's head. Not touching, most weeks. Close enough that the old man knows they are there, which he does, because he closes his eyes.

Then he says the words. The same words. Not his words, and he has never once improvised them, and that has been the point since he was nineteen: bless and keep, the face shining, the countenance lifted, and peace. Twenty seconds. Then his hands come down and he says something ordinary about the traffic, and his mother comes in and takes the plate off the side table, and Friday goes on.

He has done this for eleven years.

And lately, driving home, on the stretch where the streetlights stop and it goes dark for two miles, a thing has started arriving in the car with him.

His father is not better. Nothing that he can point at has moved in eleven years. And so the question comes, and it is not a doubt about God, which is what he would tell you if you asked him; it is a suspicion about himself. Maybe it needs to be longer. Maybe it needs to be said with more of something. Maybe he has been standing behind that chair saying a nice thing over a man he loves for over a decade, and it has been going into the ceiling, and the only person it has ever done anything for is him.

He has never said that out loud. He would not know who to say it to. His mother would be hurt, and his father would say something kind, and neither of them has any idea it is in the car.

That is you, perhaps, on your own dark stretch of road. It is not your body. It is the person you would trade places with tonight if anybody would let you. And you have said the words, and driven them to the appointments, and been the one who stays cheerful in the doorway, and you are so tired that the tiredness has stopped feeling like tiredness and started feeling like a personal failing.

Whose blessing it actually is

The words he says were not composed by anybody in his family. They are the oldest blessing in the book, and they were handed over as a script.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:Numbers 6:24

Three lines follow it, and then, when the blessing is finished, comes the sentence that changes what the whole thing is. God says why He is giving them the words at all.

And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.Numbers 6:27

Read that again, because it is easy to slide over. The priests were not being made into a source of blessing. Their job, the whole of their job, was to put the Name on the people. And then God says what He does about it, in the first person, and He keeps it entirely to Himself. I will bless them. Not you will, if you get it right. Not the power is now in your hands. He gave them words to say and He held the blessing.

Which means the men who said this over Israel for centuries stood exactly where you stand behind that chair: with words in their mouths that were not theirs, over people whose outcomes were not theirs either, and no way of knowing from the outside what was being done.

You are putting a Name on somebody you love, and that is what you were actually given to do, and you have been doing it. Numbers 6:27 is the written ground under that, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a blessing across a front room, not the amount of feeling behind a pair of raised hands.

The thing in the car with you

So let me take the passenger out of your car and put it out on the shoulder of the road, because it does not belong in there.

The outcome was never on you. Not once, not at any point in eleven years, not on the Fridays you meant it with your whole chest and not on the ones where you said it flat because you were exhausted and it was late. The blessing is God's own act in God's own sentence. He said I will bless them, and He did not add a clause about how well you would say it.

Nobody in this room is short of enough faith, and nothing has been withheld from your father for want of it, and a harder prayer or a longer one would not have moved anything, because the mechanism was never pressure. That sentence, the one that says if you had prayed differently, is not in the book. It is not true. It has been carried by good people for years and it has never helped one of them.

And I want to say something to you and not to the person you are praying for, because nobody ever does. You are tired in a way that does not show up in any conversation. You are the one everybody asks about him and never about you. If the honest answer to how are you is a word you would not say in front of your mother, that is not disloyalty and it is not weakness. It is eleven years.

So both halves, together, right here. God heals. I will not soften it, because Scripture does not soften it and this site exists to say it: He heals, He heals bodies, it is His character and not a rumor. And I do not promise you the result for your father, or for anybody. I cannot and I will not. We say what He has already said, and He sends the current. Keep going to the appointments with him, keep the people who are caring for his body; the God who hears you is not in competition with them.

You have hands, a Name, and a script that was handed to you, and none of the weight of the outcome was ever put into those hands. Numbers 6:27 says God kept the blessing, it is written and not my opinion, and it is His Spirit who does what a blessing does in a body neither of you can see into.

And one more thing, because I mean it. If eleven years have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking that everybody would have a lighter time of it without you, tell one living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot do that part. You deserve a person in the room, and asking for one does not take anything away from him.

The breakthrough

So, here, behind the chair, with your hands about four inches above his head.

Nothing about his body changed while you read this and I am not pretending it did. Eleven years are eleven years. If somebody promised you that this page would move it, they were selling.

What changes is what you understand you have been doing every Friday, and what you understand you were never carrying.

You were never made responsible for the result, and that was settled in the same verse that handed you the words. Numbers 6:27 says God said He would bless them Himself, it is written down where anyone can check it, and it is His Spirit who carries a spoken blessing into a life, not the strength of the arms holding it up.

Both halves again, here where the heat is and a promise would be easiest to slip past you. He heals. And I do not tell you what He is going to do with your father's body, because I do not know, and neither does anybody who says otherwise, and I would rather be trusted next year than believed tonight.

You have done a real thing for eleven years, and it is already counted, and no part of it went into the ceiling. It is written that the Name was put on people by men who said the words and could not see the result, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying yours across that front room every Friday since you were nineteen.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the car or standing in your own kitchen. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority is His and delegated, not earned by eleven years of Fridays. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit carries the words and not the strength of the hands you hold up. Every one of these is said under the fact that what God does with his body is His to decide. Nothing here promises a result and nothing here dates one. And nothing here is spoken at another person's will, because a person is blessed and never commanded. What is settled is that God kept the blessing to Himself, and that He never handed you the outcome.

  1. Same words I have said for eleven years, you are a blessing given to be spoken and you are not an empty thing. Numbers 6:27 says the men who said them were putting His name on people, and God kept the blessing to Himself.
  2. Weight I picked up in the fourth year, get off my shoulders in the name of Jesus. The idea that nothing has changed because I have not prayed hard enough or long enough or well enough did not come from God, and it is not riding home with me any more. It is written that He said He would bless them Himself, and His Spirit is what carries a blessing across a room, not the pressure behind my hands.
  3. Lord, You are the One who blesses, and You always were, and tonight I say Your words over him and leave the blessing exactly where You put it. Your word is the ground under this and Your Spirit is what carries it, and what You do with his body is Yours and never mine to promise. My hands go up on Friday, and the outcome stays in Yours.
