The Flat Rock at the Quarter Mile

This message is for getting up every morning and taking the first quarter mile of a trail you used to take whole, turning around at the same flat rock, calling that the walk out loud, and hearing something quiet in you file the whole arrangement as a smaller life

The trailhead is a gravel pullout with room for four trucks and there is never anybody in it at this hour. He leaves the door unlocked. Same boots, same jacket tied at the waist by the second bend, same first sound of the morning, which is his own feet on loose stone and a creek somewhere below the switchback doing what it does.

He used to take the whole thing. Seven miles out, up through the pines and along the ridge to where the valley opens and you can see weather coming from an hour away. He knows where the trail goes soft after rain and where the one root is that catches everybody. He could have walked it in the dark.

Now he walks to the flat rock.

It is a quarter mile in, a broad gray slab off the left side of the trail with a lean to it, warm by mid morning, the kind of rock that is obviously a bench and never asked to be one. He gets to the flat rock. He stands there a minute. Then he turns around and comes back down, and the whole business takes about twenty minutes, and he does it every single day.

When his daughter calls he says he went for his walk. He says it easily. It is even true.

But there is a sentence underneath it that he has never said to anybody, and it goes like this: this is not really the walk. The walk is seven miles. This is the part of the walk I can still do, and calling it the walk is a kindness I am doing myself, and we both know it.

That is what the flat rock has become. Not a place he arrives at. A place he stops short of everything else, every morning, on schedule, and then drives home and gets on with a day that has already been quietly graded before eight in the morning.

That is you, perhaps, at your own flat rock. You have a version of the thing you used to do, and you do it faithfully, and you use the old word for it in front of other people. And something in you files the whole arrangement under smaller. A smaller route, a smaller day, a smaller life, and somewhere behind that, though you would never say it out loud, a smaller man or a smaller woman than the one who used to take the ridge.

Who sets the pace

Let me put the honest thing first, because I am not going to pretend the ridge does not exist.

You lost something real. The seven miles were real and you knew where the root was and you could have walked it in the dark, and something has taken that, and the grief over it is legitimate grief and I am not going to talk you out of it or ask you to be finished with it by the end of this page. Nothing here tells you to want less. Nothing here tells you to stop asking God for the ridge. And nothing here touches the care you are under: keep your appointments, take what you are told to take, and let nobody set the people looking after your body against the God who made it.

What I want to take apart is the grading. Because somebody is holding a ruler over your mornings, and I want to know who handed it to them.

Here is Isaiah, describing how God moves a flock.

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.Isaiah 40:11

Now, a flock is not one speed. Any shepherd will tell you that. There are yearlings in it that could run all day and there are ewes heavy with young that cannot, and there are lambs that cannot cover the ground at all and have to be picked up and carried. And here is the thing the verse does, quietly, in the second half: it sets the whole pace to the slowest ones. Gently lead those that are with young. Not lead the strong and let the slow catch up. The Shepherd matches His stride to the one who cannot go far, and the entire flock moves at that pace, and He does not describe this as a concession He is making. He describes it as shepherding. It is the job.

You are being led at a pace that was set to you, and not to the version of you that took the ridge. Isaiah 40:11 has the Shepherd walking gently on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line about sheep on a hillside and lands it on a man standing at a flat rock at seven in the morning.

The word for a smaller life

Now the pit, and I am going to name it flat out.

Somewhere in the last stretch you started measuring your worth in distance covered. Not consciously. Nobody sits down and decides that. It gets in through the ordinary door: the world you live in praises output, the church you love loves a testimony with an arc, and both of those are fine until the day your route gets shorter and you have no category left for a life that does not climb. So the quarter mile gets filed under less, and then, because a man is not separate from his mornings, so does the man.

I want to say two things about that, and I need both of them held at once.

The first is that your quarter mile is not a lesser version of a walk. It is a walk. The Shepherd who set the pace is on it, the whole distance, and He is not somewhere up on the ridge with the strong ones waiting for you to catch up and rejoin the real flock. There is no real flock up there. The flock is where He is, and He is walking gently, which is the exact word Isaiah used.

The second is that I am not asking you to be at peace with it. I have read the pages that do that, where a person is talked gently into calling the loss a gift, and by the last paragraph they have been maneuvered into gratitude for something they never wanted. Acceptance is not the assignment here. Neither is refusing to accept. If you want the ridge back, want it. Ask for it out loud. Wanting it is not a failure of faith and it is not ingratitude, and having made a kind of peace with the rock is not a failure of hope either. Both of those doors stay open and neither is the price of your dignity.

You have a Shepherd who has never once graded a route, and He is not comparing this morning to any other morning of your life. It is written that He gathers the lambs with His arm, which is a thing done to the ones who cannot cover the ground, and it is His Spirit who makes that an actual arm and not a nice sentence about one.

And one thing before we go further, because it belongs in the open. If the shortening has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the mornings would be easier to stop than to keep, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot walk out to the rock with you. You deserve somebody who can.

The breakthrough

So here is what stands, at the rock, with the creek going below the switchback.

God heals. I say it with nothing wrapped around it, because Scripture says it that way and this site exists to say it out loud. He heals bodies, and He has not gotten tired of the subject, and the length of your route is not a message from Him about His intentions.

And in the same breath, because this page would be dishonest if it dropped either half: I do not promise you the ridge. I cannot, and I will not, and anybody who tells you they can has stopped speaking for God and started speaking for themselves. What He does with your body is His. We say what He has said, and He sends the current, and the not knowing is where I live too.

Which leaves the thing that is actually settled, and it is bigger than the trail.

You are already inside the flock, at the pace He set, carried where the ground runs out. Isaiah 40:11 puts the arm under the lambs and the gentleness in the leading, and it is the same Spirit in you who makes that a fact about this morning rather than a fact about sheep.

You have a life that is not being weighed by the mile. It is written that He gently leads, and gently is His word and not a euphemism somebody invented to make you feel better, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it from being merely a comfort and makes it a place to stand.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the rock, or at the sink, or wherever your turning place turned out to be. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority is His and delegated, never something a strong body earned and never something a shorter route took away. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit carries them, not the strength you can put behind them. What God does with this body is His to decide, and every line below is spoken under that, and nothing on this page promises you the ridge or puts a date on anything.

  1. Flat rock at the quarter mile, you are a place I arrived at and not a place I fell short of. Isaiah 40:11 has the Shepherd gently leading the ones who cannot go far, and this is the pace He set, out here, on purpose.
  2. Ruler I picked up somewhere, you are measuring a man in miles and God has never used your units, and I set you down in the name of Jesus. It is written that He gathers the lambs with His arm, and the Holy Spirit is the one telling me what I am worth, not the distance on my boots.
  3. Shepherd, You set the pace of Your whole flock to the ones who cannot go far, and I am walking at Your speed this morning and not behind it. Your Spirit makes Your word live in me, and what You do with this body is Yours to decide, and I am going out to the rock tomorrow to walk with You there.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
