The List That Got Shorter

Tuesday, a quarter past six, and the plates are down before anybody sits, because in that house you do not start until everybody is at the table.

The prayer is the same one it has always been. His father said it, and his father's mother said it before that, and the two kids know it well enough to come in half a beat early on the good part. He says the front of it, the older girl says the middle, and then comes the list at the end, which is the part they made up themselves years ago and which nobody has ever written down.

And for Abuela. And for the man across the street with the bad knee. And for Marisol's friend from school. And for tío Rafa.

Amen. Then noise, and chairs, and somebody wants the salt.

Now here is what nobody at that table knows, and there is no reason they ever would.

He said that last name out loud tonight, the way he says it every night. But in his own praying, the actual praying, the one that happens after the house has gone quiet and he is sitting on the end of the bed with one sock in his hand, that name came off the list about a year ago.

It was not a decision. He did not have a bad night and cross it out. What happened was slower and more ordinary than that. He asked for his brother for a long time, in every way he could think of, and every time he asked he had to pick the hope up again, and picking it up got more expensive each year, until one night he got to the end of his praying and noticed he had gone straight past that name without stopping, and the next night he did the same, and after a while it was just how the prayer went.

So he says amen at the table to a prayer he is no longer making. His mouth says it. The rest of him left the room a year ago.

That is you, perhaps, at your own table, with your own name missing. You still go. You still say the words. Nobody has noticed anything, because there is nothing to notice. And there is one subject you used to bring to God constantly, and you have not brought it in so long that the not bringing it has become the normal shape of your praying, and you would not know how to start again without making a whole thing of it.

Nobody here is going to call that unbelief

Let me get the accusation out of the room first, because it is probably already sitting there and it is not from God.

You did not rebel. You did not harden. You got tired in a very specific way, which is the tiredness of asking for something that matters more than almost anything and then having to carry the hope for it around all week afterward. A person can only do that so many times before something in them starts protecting them from the cost, and what you did was not a spiritual failure. It was a man putting down a weight he had carried by himself for years. I am not going to name that unbelief and neither is anybody else on this page.

And now look at the man Jesus met, and look at what he was allowed to say out loud.

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.Mark 9:24

That is a father saying two contradictory things in one sentence, in public, crying, in front of a crowd, about his own son. He is not tidy. He does not sort himself out first and then speak. He brings the whole mixed thing to Jesus exactly as it is in him, and Jesus does not correct him, does not ask him to come back when he has resolved it, and does not require him to promise how he will feel about it tomorrow.

You are welcome to come exactly as mixed as that man was, and nothing has to be sorted out first. Mark 9:24 is where I get that, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence shouted in a crowd two thousand years ago and lays it on a man sitting on the end of a bed with one sock in his hand.

You have not been marked absent, and a year of not saying it did not go on any record. It is written that this father was heard as he was, and His Spirit has been in the room for every one of the nights you went straight past that name, and He did not leave when the list got shorter.

The door you stopped knocking on was never locked

Here is the fear that keeps a person out for years, and I want to say it plainly so you can look at it.

It is not that God said no. If God had said no you would know where you stood. It is that you stopped, and the longer you stopped the more starting again feels like an event. There would have to be an explanation. There would have to be some account of the year. And underneath that sits the real one: if I ask again, I have to put the hope back on, and I am not sure I can carry it a second time.

So hear this. There is no re entry process. There is no fee for the year. Nobody failed to have enough faith here. That sentence is not in the book and it is not true, and it never once appeared in the story of the father in the crowd. You do not owe God an explanation of the silence and He is not waiting for one before He will hear you, and if you brought Him the subject tonight in one flat sentence with no feeling in it whatsoever, that would be a real prayer.

And I am not going to ask you for anything about tomorrow. This page is not asking you to commit to praying about it every night from now on, or to promise you will not go quiet again, and if it did it would just be another weight on the same shoulders. Once is enough. Tonight is enough. You are not signing up for a campaign.

Now let me hold the two halves together in one breath, right here where the temperature is up, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest. God heals. He heals bodies, He is a healer, that is His character and His written word and not a rumor, and this site was built to say it out loud. And I do not promise you the result for the name you took off the list. I cannot and I will not, and no honest voice can. We say what He has said and we leave the current to Him. Both halves are true at once, and the reason I will not promise you the outcome is the same reason you can trust me about the door.

You are not locked out of a subject you went quiet on, and the door was never bolted from His side. Mark 9:24 has a man arriving mid collapse and being received, and it is His Spirit who brings a person back to something they thought they had lost the right to mention.

And one more thing, and I mean it. If any of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the people at that table would carry less without you, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot be that person. You deserve one at your table, and asking for that is not a thing you have to earn either.
