Rami cooked for eleven, which is what he cooks for whether eleven are coming or not.
There is rice with the burnt bottom the way his mother did it. There is the tray of small dishes. There is bread under a cloth on the counter and figs in the blue bowl because there are always figs in the blue bowl. He put the chairs out at six, including the two from the bedroom, including the low one nobody likes.
Nobody came. There is a wedding on the other side of town and there is rain, and the two things together emptied his Thursday for the first time in as long as he can remember. Two people sent word. The rest simply did not arrive, which is not a crime and he does not hold it against a living soul.
He stands in the doorway of his own kitchen with a cloth over his shoulder and the pots still warm, and he waits to feel disappointed.
What arrives instead is relief. Enormous, quiet, whole body relief, the kind that goes down through the knees. And he stands there with it, and then it frightens him, and the fright is worse than any tiredness he has ever had in this house.
Because if that is what is in him, then what has he been doing? Eleven years of Thursdays. What was that, if the best moment of it is the night it did not happen? He looks at the chairs, out in their circle, facing nobody. He does not sit down in any of them. He starts putting the food away in small containers, which takes a long time, and he does it in the dark with only the light over the stove on.
That is you, perhaps. In your own doorway, with the cloth on your shoulder, frightened by how good the quiet feels.
The relief that frightened him
Let me name the thing under the fright, because it is not what he thinks it is.
He believes the relief is evidence of a bad heart. He has already run the case against himself and delivered the verdict in the time it took the rice to cool: that a man who is glad the house is empty has been faking the eleven years. That is a merciless reading and it is also wrong. Relief is not the opposite of love. Relief is what a carried thing does when it is set down, and the size of the relief tells you the size of the weight, not the size of the fraud.
There is a difference between a man who has stopped loving people and a man who has been poured out for eleven years and never once poured into. They look identical from the doorway. Only one of them is true, and it is not the one he just convicted himself of.
Here is the sentence Jesus stood up and read out loud in His own hometown, and then closed the book and said it was fulfilled that day.
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;Isaiah 61:1
Bind up the brokenhearted. Not comfort. Not console. Bind up, which is what you do to a thing that has actually torn, with cloth and pressure and time, because the tear is real and repair is real.
You are one of the brokenhearted He was sent to bind up, and being the host does not move you out of that sentence. Isaiah 61:1 does not carve out an exception for the man who cooks, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that written line and lays it against a real person standing in a kitchen doorway at nine at night.
What binding up is and what it is not
Now I have to be very careful with you, because this is the exact place where writing like this goes rotten.
I am not offering you the inside because the outside did not happen. Whatever you are asking God for in your body, that request stands, unshrunk, and nothing on this page renames it. If somebody has ever handed you peace of mind as though it settled the account for a body that was not healed, they handed you a substitute and called it a gift. That is not what this is. What Isaiah 61:1 describes is additional. It sits alongside what you are asking, never instead of it, and if it arrives while the other thing has not, you are allowed to hold both and be honest about both.
With that said plainly, look at what is actually in the verse. Good tidings to the meek. Binding up for the brokenhearted. Liberty for captives. Opening of the prison for the bound. Four different repairs, and every one of them happens inside a person.
You have a repair coming to the inner man that was written into the anointing itself. It is written in Isaiah 61:1 that He was sent for this, and the Spirit of the Lord is named in the first line of the verse as the One upon Him for it, so the inside of you is not an afterthought in the mission.
And notice who He was sent to. The meek, the brokenhearted, the captives, the bound. Not the strong ones who ran out of steam and should have paced themselves better. Nobody here failed to manage his energy well enough, and that sentence is not in the book. He was sent to people at the end of themselves, which is the only qualification listed.
You were poured out for eleven years, and the One who was anointed to bind up broken hearts has been watching every Thursday of it. The word says He was sent for this, and the same Spirit who was upon Him then is the one in the room with you tonight, in the dark, with the light over the stove on.
Both halves, together, because either one alone will hurt somebody.
God heals. Scripture says it and the Holy Spirit still carries His word into human bodies, and I am not going to make that smaller so it sounds more careful. And I am not promising you a result, in your body or in your heart. Not a date, not an outcome, not a Thursday when everything is different. The declaring is ours; the current is His, and He is not required to explain the timing to me or to you.
So the turn tonight is not that the fear was silly. It is that the fear was aimed at the wrong man.
The relief was not the confession of a fraud. It was the sound of a weight going down, and there is Somebody in the room who was anointed, by name, in writing, to deal with exactly what is underneath a weight like that. He does not need you to be less relieved. He needs you to sit down.
Right now, as you read this, the anointing described in Isaiah 61:1 is aimed at the inside of you, and it is not a consolation for anything. The Spirit of the Lord who is named in that verse is the one who does the binding, and He does it in the middle of a request that has not been answered yet, not instead of it.
Declare this over yourself
You have the standing to say these out loud because Christ is in you, and the ground under them is Scripture and not eleven years of Thursdays. The Holy Spirit carries them, not the strength of your voice at the end of a long night. And what God does with this body is His to decide; nothing here dates a result, promises you one, or offers you the inside in place of what you are still asking for.
- Chairs I set out for other people, you are mine to sit in tonight. Isaiah 61:1 says He was sent to bind up the brokenhearted, and there is no exception written into it for the man who cooks. I am taking the low one by the window with the light still on over the stove.
- Reading I took of my own heart tonight, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. The Spirit of the Lord is upon Him to bind up broken hearts and He was sent for the man in the doorway too, and that is written, not guessed. You do not get to sentence me in my own kitchen.
- Jesus, You are the One who stood up in Your hometown, read this verse out loud and said it was fulfilled that day. The Spirit of the Lord is upon You to bind up the brokenhearted, and tonight I am one of them, in my own kitchen with the pots still warm. Whatever You do with this body, I am sitting down in a chair I set out for somebody else.
