She sits in the back row on purpose, second folding chair from the end, because the back row is where a person can leave without anybody having to watch her go.
Wednesday night. The hall smells like coffee and radiator dust, and there are maybe forty people scattered through two hundred chairs, which is what a Wednesday looks like anywhere. Somebody is running the words on the screen a beat late and nobody minds. A boy in the third row keeps turning around to look at the door. Her coat is folded over her knees and her phone is face up on top of the coat, screen dark, volume all the way up, because they said they would call this week.
The number is saved under one word. She typed it in herself, standing in the parking lot, one handed, so that she would know it at a glance and not have to read anything else on the screen first. One word. She could tell you exactly where it sits in her contacts, between a cousin and somebody from work.
Here is what she has been carrying all week and has not said out loud to anyone. The room has had a great deal to say about her body. The front desk had a sentence. The letter had two paragraphs, and she has read them the way you read a road sign in fog. Her sister in law had a theory and gave it to her on Monday, kindly, at length. And her own head has been reciting all of it back at four in the morning in a voice that sounds a great deal like her own voice. She could give you every line of it. She is fluent.
And she is sitting in a room built for hearing from God, singing a song about His goodness with her mouth, and if you leaned over right now and asked her to tell you one sentence heaven has said about that same body, she would go quiet. Not because she does not believe there is one. Because she has not heard it. All week, in her own ears, the only voice speaking about her body has been the room's.
That is you, perhaps, on your own chair near the door, with your own one word saved in your own phone. You know every sentence this week said about you. You are fluent in all of it. And the other voice, the one that spoke over your body before any of this started, has not been given the floor.
The room has a lot to say
Let me put one thing first so that it is not a footnote. The people caring for your body are a gift and they are not the enemy of anything on this page. Keep your appointments. Take what you have been given to take. Nothing here sets prayer against care, and anybody who does that is playing with something that is not theirs to play with. The God who hears you is not in competition with the person who answers that phone.
Now count the voices from this week.
There is the voice of the paperwork, which is precise and is doing its job. There is the voice of the people who love you, which is warm and constant and not always accurate. There is the voice of a search bar at midnight, which ought to be walked outside. And there is your own voice at four in the morning, which is the loudest one in the house, repeating the other three back to you until they stop sounding like information and start sounding like a verdict.
None of those voices is your enemy. They are simply the only ones talking.
And a soul that hears one kind of sentence forty times a day and the other kind never will begin to live as though the first kind is the whole of what is true. Not because it chose to. Because that is what a soul does with repetition.
David knew that about his own soul. He is not addressing a crowd in Psalm 103. He is talking to himself, out loud, the way a person talks to herself in a parking lot:
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:Psalm 103:2
Forget not. Hear it as a man who knows exactly how easily he does. You are already spoken over, and the speaking came a long time before the paperwork did. That is not my opinion about you. Psalm 103:2 is a man ordering his own soul to remember what he was given, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line written for one man's soul and sets it down in yours on a Wednesday night in a folding chair.
What the rest of that sentence says He does
The verse ends on a colon, which means the psalm is not finished with its sentence. It goes straight on to name what the benefits are, and the third verse names two of them without any decoration at all: He forgives all your iniquities, and He heals all your diseases. That is in the book. It is not a slogan somebody printed on a mug and it is not a line I invented to keep you reading.
So here is the whole of what this site believes, in one breath, because either half on its own becomes a lie.
God heals. He heals bodies. He has done it, He does it, it is His character before it is anybody's story, and Psalm 103 files healing among the things He does the same way it files forgiveness there.
And I do not promise you the result. Not the timing, not the shape of it, not what that call says. I cannot and I will not, and no honest voice on this subject will. We say what He has said and we leave the current to Him. Both halves are true at the same moment, and I am holding both of them in front of you instead of handing you one and quietly hiding the other behind my back.
Which means something for the week you have had. You have a word over this body that was spoken before the first sentence of this week was written. It is written in Psalm 103, it was not written about somebody more deserving than you, and it is the Holy Spirit rather than the volume of your own voice who carries it off a page and into a room.
And now the pit, named plainly, because naming it takes most of its power away. The pit here is not doubt. The pit is arithmetic. Forty sentences from the room, none from Him, and after enough days a person concludes that the room is the only one with anything to say about her. Nothing about that is a shortage of enough faith. It is a shortage of hearing, and hearing is the one part of all this that can genuinely change tonight.
And one thing more, because I would far rather say it and not need it. If this week has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the people around you would have an easier time of it without you, tell a living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot do that part. You deserve somebody in the room with you.
So here is what is true in the back row, with the coat over your knees and the screen dark.
You have been spoken over, and what was spoken has not been withdrawn because your week went badly. Psalm 103 says forget not, which is the grammar of something already handed over, and it is His Spirit who brings it back to a mind that has been reciting other sentences since Monday.
I am not promising you what that call says. I said it once already and I am saying it again right here, at the hottest part of the page, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest to make and would do the most damage. He heals, and the result is His, and both of those stay true in the same sentence tonight.
This is yours: one sentence from Him over the same body the week has been talking about, said out loud, in your own voice, before you stand up. It is written, the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line live in a room, and it takes about four seconds.
Declare this over yourself
Now say these out loud, in the back row, with your hand where it was. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His rather than yours by nature, given to you in Him and never earned by a good week. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries the words, not the force with which you say them. What God does with this body is His to decide, and I say all three of these under that, and nothing on this page promises you a result or puts a date on one. What is settled is that He has spoken over you, and that the speaking came first.
- One word saved in my phone, you are a name and a number and you are not the voice over this body. Psalm 103:2 tells my own soul to forget not all His benefits, and those benefits were listed long before your call was scheduled.
- Suspicion that heaven has nothing to say, get out in the name of Jesus. You have been living on repetition and on nothing else at all. It is written that His benefits are not to be forgotten, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps bringing them back to me.
- Lord, You heal, and You have spoken over this body, and I am receiving what You said tonight with my hand where it hurts. Your Spirit carries Your word into this hall, not the steadiness of my voice, and the result is Yours and is not mine to promise anybody. I am not leaving this chair until one line of Yours has been said out loud over me.
Psalm 103:2
