Twenty to nine, and the parking lot has emptied down to the row nearest the doors and one delivery truck idling at the far end with its lights on.
Her groceries are in the trunk. The engine is off. The key fob is in the cup holder next to the phone, face up, screen dark, her sister's name one tap down the recent calls.
She has said it four times now.
Once with both hands on the wheel and her eyes shut. Once looking straight at the lit sign over the store entrance, the letters buzzing a little at this hour. Once almost silently, just the shapes of it. And once at full volume, out loud, alone in a locked car, because the fourth time was the first time her voice did not do the thing it does on the third word, and it has to not do that when her sister picks up.
Rehearsal. That is what this is. She is not going to tell you the sentence and neither am I, because the words on that letter belong to her and not to this page. What matters is that she has learned them. Learned them the way a person learns a hymn: by saying it until it holds.
A man two spaces over is loading cases of water into a hatchback and taking his time about it, and she is glad of him, and glad of the cart he walks back to the corral, and glad when he finally pulls away. Tonight's receipt has curled itself into a tube on the passenger seat next to the folded letter, which has ridden in this car for eleven days and been read in it more times than she could tell you.
And here is the small thing she notices at twenty to nine, and it is the reason for this whole page.
She has spoken that sentence over her own body four times tonight. In eleven days she has spoken what God says about this body zero times. Not once. Not out loud, not under her breath, not with her hand anywhere near the place. She can recite the letter. She could not give you one line of what He has said.
That is you, perhaps, in your own car with the engine off, practicing. Very good now at saying one thing. The other thing, the one that was said over you long before anything was typed, has never yet been spoken out loud in the room where you actually live.
What a sentence does when it is said out loud
There is a reason she rehearsed, and every person who has ever had to deliver hard news knows it in their chest. A sentence held in the head is one thing. A sentence said into a room is another. Saying it is what makes it carryable, and what steadies the hand that has to hold it out to somebody else.
So she has spoken over her own body four times tonight, with real skill, in a locked car, and the words she practiced were somebody else's.
Now listen to what God says about His own speech, because the whole hinge of this page is here.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.Isaiah 55:11
Read it slowly. It goes forth out of His mouth. It is sent, deliberately, toward a result He chose. And it does not come back empty handed. That is not a pretty line about how nice the Bible is. That is God describing what happens the moment He speaks: the word leaves, the word works, the word arrives.
Which means something specific for a woman with an engine off and a phone in a cup holder. You are inside the reach of a word that went out of God's mouth long before any letter went into an envelope, and it has not come back empty. I am not inventing that on your behalf. Isaiah 55:11 is where it stands written, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a sentence spoken through a prophet in one century into a parking lot in another without losing a gram of its weight.
The only word anyone has said in here
Now the pit, named plainly, and I promise you this is not a scolding.
For eleven days one word has been read over this body and the other has not been read at all. That is the whole of it. Nobody failed here. There is no missing key. The idea that a body goes unhealed because its owner did not say the right thing over it is not in the book and it is not true, and I will not let it sit in this article unanswered.
And the letter is true. It was written by people who trained for years to write it, and the care they are giving you is a mercy coming to you through human hands, and nothing on this page asks you to stop it, change it, delay it, or set it against prayer. Keep every appointment. The God who hears you has never once been in competition with the people looking after your body.
But a room where one sentence is said two hundred times and another sentence is never said at all will begin to sound as though the first one is the only one there is. Not because it is. Because it is the only one anyone has spoken out loud in there.
You have a second word over this body, and it was spoken first. That is written, in Isaiah 55 and in a hundred places besides, and it is the Spirit of God who takes what is written and makes it live in a person, which is why this is not positive thinking and never was.
And one more thing, said plainly because I mean it. If these eleven days have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if some part of you has quietly stopped wanting to be here, tell a living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States you can call or text 988, any hour of the night. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who will sit in a room with you tonight. A page cannot do that job. You deserve a person beside you, and there is nothing in that sentence to be ashamed of.
The rehearsal nobody has run yet
She rehearsed four times because it mattered that her voice hold. Here is the ask of this page, and it is small enough to do in a parking lot: run the other rehearsal once.
Not to make something happen. I want to be exact about that, because a page that hands you an action and then hints that the action is a lever has stopped telling you the truth. It is not a lever. It is a hearing. For eleven days yours has been the only voice in this car, and God has something on record about you, and the reason to say it out loud is so that your own ears are finally in the room when it is said.
You were spoken over long before you were ever written about. Psalm 139:16 says His book already held your days before one of them came to pass, and it is the same Spirit who breathed that psalm standing in this car tonight, which is why the older word is not the weaker one.
So. Twenty to nine, engine off, phone face up in the cup holder, and the call still to make.
Right now, as you read this, a word out of God's own mouth is at work on the thing you are frightened of, and it is not coming back empty. That is Isaiah 55:11 and not my opinion, and it is His Spirit who makes a sentence written on a scroll land in a parked car carrying the weight it had the day it was spoken.
And now both halves in one breath, here, where the heat is highest, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and most dishonest.
God heals. He heals bodies. He has always healed bodies, He is doing it somewhere in the world this week, and Scripture does not apologize for saying so and neither will I. And I do not promise you the result. Not this letter, not the next one, not the timing, not the shape of it. I do not know, and no honest voice does. We say what He said and we leave the current to Him. And if it does not come, or does not come the way you asked for it, hear this: that is not a verdict on you. Not on your faith, not on your words, not on eleven days of anything, not on some sin you have not remembered. Anyone who tells you otherwise has stopped speaking for God.
You are held by the One who sent the word, and that was as true on the first day as it is tonight. Romans 8:38 says nothing in the whole created order gets between you and the love of God in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit He put in you is the deposit He left in the room to prove it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the car, with your hand where it was. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His and was handed over in Him, not earned by eleven days of anything at all. Scripture is the ground under every line, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries the words, not the steadiness of a voice, which may not be steady tonight, and that is fine. What God does with this body is His to decide and I speak all three of these underneath that. Nothing here promises a result or puts a date on one. What is settled is that He has spoken, and that what He speaks does not come back empty.
- Letter folded on the passenger seat, you are a true page and you are not the first word spoken over this body. Isaiah 55:11 says the word that goes out of God's mouth does not come back empty, and it went out long before you were typed.
- Suspicion that I only rehearse bad news now, you are a conclusion I came to with the engine off, and you have no standing in this car. Get out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that His word accomplishes what He pleases, and His Spirit is the one speaking over me in here, not the page on the seat.
- Lord, You heal, and You have already spoken over this body, and tonight I say back what You said, out loud, with my hand where it hurts. Your word does not return to You empty and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and the result is Yours and not mine to promise. I am not starting this engine until the other word has been said in here.
