Her aunt sits in the kitchen chair with a towel over her shoulders, and she has been sitting there since a quarter past two.
Sunday. The chair pulled out from the table and turned around, the way it has been turned around in this kitchen for thirty years. The jar of hair butter is open by the salt, lid upside down beside it. The parting comb is behind her own ear where it always is. A game is on somewhere in the front room with the sound low, and outside somebody's children keep running past the window and then back the other way, and the screen door has stopped closing all the way since June.
Her hands work. Part, grease, three sections, down and down and down, and lay it aside and take the next. Her aunt has the good posture of a woman who has had her hair done at this table her whole adult life. Every so often she says something about a cousin, and they laugh, and then the kitchen goes quiet again.
And underneath all of it, without a break, she is praying.
Not out loud. Under her breath, so low it is more like breathing with intent, and it has been going on now for the better part of two hours: the same words around and around, please, please, Lord, You know, please. She has prayed through the whole left side of her aunt's head and most of the back.
Then somewhere in the second hour she notices what she is actually doing, and it stops her hands for a second.
She is praying like somebody working a shift. Like there is a quota. Like the thing she is holding is not her aunt's hair at all but her aunt's outcome, and it is sitting right there on her two hands, and if she keeps going, if she is faithful enough for long enough, if she does not get distracted by the game in the other room, then maybe it comes out different. And underneath that, further down where she does not look, is the other half of it: if it does not come out different, there is going to be a Thursday where she was tired and prayed a short prayer, and she is going to remember that Thursday for the rest of her life.
She has never said any of that out loud. She would be embarrassed to. And she has believed it, in her hands, for months.
That is you, perhaps, behind somebody's chair. Your hands are busy with an ordinary kind thing and your whole chest is carrying a result you were never given the authority to produce. Nobody put it on you. You picked it up because you love them, which is how this particular weight always gets picked up.
How the outcome got onto your hands
Let me say the first thing plainly, because you have carried it alone and it has never once been named to you: you are not the deciding factor in another person's body, and you never were.
That is not a demotion. Read it again slowly. It is the removal of a weight nobody ever handed you and that you were never built to hold. You have been running an arrangement in your head where the result is proportional to your effort, and I know that arrangement well, because it is what love does when it is frightened and has nowhere to put its hands.
But look at what that arrangement does to you on the bad days. It makes every tired prayer a liability. It turns Thursday into evidence. And if the news ever goes the way you fear, it hands you a lifetime of auditing your own faithfulness for the moment you let them down. That is a cruelty, it is not from God, and I am taking it off this table right now.
Here is the verse, and read the whole of it, because the first half is about you and the second half is about Him.
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.Romans 8:34
Who is he that condemneth. That is the question the whole verse opens with, and the answer is nobody, and that includes the version of you who has been quietly building a case against herself while she braids.
You have a place in this, and it was never the deciding place. Romans 8:34 is written, the intercession named in it belongs to Christ and not to your stamina, and the Holy Spirit is the one who prays in you when the words run out at the back of somebody's head.
The second voice in the room
Now the part that changes how the next two hours feel.
Christ is at the right hand of God, and He is making intercession. Present tense. He was doing it before you sat down on that stool, He does it while you are asleep, He was doing it on the Thursday you are so worried about, and He does not lose His place when the game in the other room gets loud.
So your praying is not the first voice in this room. It is the second. You are joining something already going on, the way somebody comes in on the second verse of a song the congregation has been singing since before they got there.
You were praying into something already in progress, and the One at the right hand of God has not missed a day. That is written down, and His Spirit joins your breath to it, which is why a whispered please over a parting comb is real prayer and not a smaller kind.
Now the two true things in one breath, because they belong together. God heals. He heals bodies, He does it still, and Scripture on His kindness to them is plain, and I am not going to make it vague to protect myself. And I do not promise you an outcome for your aunt, your husband, your child or your friend. I cannot and I will not, because a promise like that makes their body the proof of my sentence and puts you back under the weight I just took off you. What He does is His to decide, and He is good in either case. And nothing anywhere says a longer prayer, a harder prayer, or a better worded prayer moves that decision.
Condemnation has no right to stay in a room where Christ is already interceding. Romans 8:34 opens by dismissing the accuser, and the same Spirit who carries your prayer up carries that dismissal down to you, at the table, with grease on your fingers.
And if you are simply exhausted by all of it, hear this too: your tiredness is not a betrayal of the person you love. You are allowed to be a person who is worn out. There is no ledger.
One more thing, and I mean it. If the carrying has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking that the people you are praying for would be better served by somebody else being here, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can come and sit with you tonight. Do not wait until you have finished looking after everybody. You deserve somebody beside you too.
So here is the turn, and it is not that your prayer does not matter. It matters. It is simply not load bearing in the way you have been treating it.
It is already settled that Christ makes intercession at the right hand of God, and nothing in your effort adds to that and nothing in your tiredness subtracts from it. Romans 8:34 is written and it is not a mood; the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it real to a woman who has been holding somebody's outcome on her hands for months.
You get to love them without being their guarantee. You get to pray without auditing yourself afterward. And you get to be tired on a Thursday without owing anybody an apology for it.
Declare this over yourself
You have the standing to speak these because Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by you. Every line rests on Scripture, which is what makes it authority rather than effort; the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, not how long you keep going; and what God does with any body, theirs or yours, is His to decide, so nothing below promises a result or names a day.
- Kitchen chair with a towel over its back, you are where I pray and you are not where the outcome is decided. Romans 8:34 says Christ is at the right hand of God making intercession, and His Spirit is praying in me while my hands are busy.
- Belief that this rests on how hard I pray, get out, in the name of Jesus. I am the second voice in this room and not the first; Scripture puts the intercession in the hands of Christ, and I am blessing the woman in that chair and leaving the result where it already sits.
- Jesus, You are at the right hand of God interceding for her right now, and You were doing it on the days I was too tired to say anything. Your word says You are the one who makes intercession, so I am opening my hands at this table and handing back what was never mine to hold. Whatever You do, You are good, and I am going to keep braiding and blessing her.
