The coffee pot has a chip out of the handle and it has had that chip since she was about nine, and nobody in this family has ever suggested replacing it.
Saturday morning, her father's kitchen, the radio on low the way it always is, tuned to the station that talks more than it plays. He is at the table with the crossword folded into quarters, pretending he is doing it as fast as he used to. There is a plate with toast crusts on it. The window over the sink faces east, so the whole counter is lit up gold at this hour and always has been.
She drove forty minutes to get here and she came for one reason. She came to pray for her dad.
Last Sunday she prayed for a woman she had never met in her life. Stood in the aisle after everything had finished, hand on the woman's shoulder, and prayed with her whole chest, out loud, in a voice that carried three rows and did not shake once. She named things. She stood on the word. Afterward the woman held on to her and cried, and she drove home feeling like she had been useful for once.
And now she is standing at this counter with her back to her father, topping up a cup of coffee that did not need topping up, and what comes out of her mouth is: you want a warm up, Dad.
That is it. That is what her voice will do in here.
She has tried three times this morning and she can feel where it stops. It stops right at the top of her throat, in the exact place where the words go for anybody else. She has ministered to strangers in parking lots. She has prayed over people whose names she did not know, in hospitals, on the phone at midnight. And in her own father's kitchen, with a chipped coffee pot in her hand and the man himself eight feet away doing a crossword, her voice will not do the same thing twice, and she cannot for the life of her tell you why.
That is you, perhaps, in your own kitchen, with your own person. You are the one people ask. You have prayed for half your church. And there is a doorway in your family you go quiet in, and you have started to suspect there is something wrong with you.
Why the voice works for strangers
Say the ordinary things first. The people caring for him are a gift, and nothing on this page competes with them, and nothing here suggests he change one thing about what he has been told to do. Prayer and care are not two doors you pick between.
Now the throat.
Here is what is actually different about the stranger in the aisle, and it is not your faith and it is not your love. When you pray for a stranger, you go home. Whatever happens next happens in a house you do not live in. You gave what you had, and you carried the asking, and the weight of the result went where it belongs, which is somewhere other than on you.
But you live in this kitchen. You will be back in three weeks. You will see this coffee pot at Christmas. And somewhere along the way, quietly and without ever agreeing to it, you picked up something that was never assigned to you: the outcome. Not the asking. The outcome. And a person carrying the outcome cannot pray, because every big word out of her mouth is a promise she has silently made herself responsible for keeping.
That is why the voice stops. It is not a failure of nerve. It is a load bearing wall standing exactly where the words come out.
So let me hand you a man who did this in front of a crowd, badly, and got everything he came for except control.
And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.Mark 5:23
That is Jairus. He ran an assembly. He was a man with a title and a seat and people who watched what he did, and about his own child he did not manage a careful, balanced, well worded prayer. He begged. He said what was true, he named her, he asked out loud for hands to be laid on her, and he did not tidy any of it up first.
You are allowed to ask plainly for someone you love, and you were allowed long before you found the right words. Mark 5:23 is a father asking without polish and being received without correction, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a plain sentence over a person, not the composure of the one saying it.
Jairus carried the asking, and not the result
Now look at what Jairus does not do, because this is the whole of the category and it is where people get hurt.
He does not heal her. He never touches the outcome once. He carries one thing, the asking, and he carries it the eight or nine minutes it takes to get there, and then it is out of his hands and into hands that can actually hold it.
And on that road the worst thing happens: people come out from the house and tell him not to trouble the teacher any further, and nowhere, not in one line, is Jairus told that he should have asked harder, or sooner, or with better words. Nobody audits his prayer. The story simply keeps moving toward the house.
Hear that, because you have probably been told the opposite in a hundred gentle ways. A longer prayer does not buy a better outcome. A louder one does not either. Nothing about your quiet Saturdays is a shortage of enough faith, and nothing that happens to your father lands on your account.
You have one assignment in this kitchen and it is the asking, it is written in Mark 5:23 in the shape of a man who asked and then walked, and the Spirit of God is the one who carries the word over a person while you go back to pouring the coffee.
Now both halves of what this site says, in one breath, because either half on its own turns into a lie.
God heals. He heals bodies. He did it in that house and it is His character, and this domain will not mumble it.
And I do not promise you the result. Not for him, not for the timing, not for how any of this goes. I cannot and I will not. We say what He has said and we leave the current to Him, and both of those stay true in the same sentence, which is exactly what frees your throat: you are not about to promise your father anything, so you can finally speak.
One more thing, and it is for you and not for him. Caring for somebody is its own kind of tired, and if this has taken you anywhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking everyone involved would have an easier time without you in the middle of it, tell one living human being today rather than tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot do that. You are not only the one who carries; you are somebody who is carried too.
So here is what is true at the counter, with the gold light on it and your back to the room.
You were never handed the outcome, and it is not sitting on your shoulders no matter how long you have been carrying it like it was. It is written in Mark 5:23 that a father asked and a teacher went, two different jobs held by two different people, and it is His Spirit who does the carrying rather than the weight of anybody's care.
I am not promising you what happens to your dad. I am saying that right here, at the hottest part of this page, because this is where a promise would be easiest to make and would do the most damage to you both. He heals, and the result is His, and both stay true in that kitchen on Saturday.
You have one name to say out loud in a room you are actually standing in, one line of Scripture to put over it, and nothing else asked of you. It is written, the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a said word do anything at all, and it takes less time than warming up a cup.
Declare this over yourself
Now say these out loud, in the kitchen or in the car outside it. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His and not yours by nature, given to you in Him and never earned by how well you have cared for anybody. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit carries the words, not the volume you find. What God does with his body is His to decide, and I say all three of these under that, and nothing on this page promises a result or dates one. What is settled is that the asking was yours and the outcome never was.
- Coffee pot with the chipped handle, you are a thing to hide behind and you are not my assignment. Mark 5:23 has a father asking out loud in front of a whole crowd, and I am able to say my own father's name in this kitchen.
- Load I picked up at his kitchen table, get off me in the name of Jesus. You have been telling me the result is mine to produce and that a bigger prayer would buy it. It is written that Jairus carried the asking and the Lord carried the rest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a word over a person, not the size of my voice.
- Lord, You heal, and my father's name is safe in Your hands and was never safe in mine. Your Spirit carries what Your word said in Mark 5 into this kitchen, and the outcome is Yours and is not mine to promise or to produce. I am saying his name out loud today and putting one verse over him instead of rehearsing my request again.
